In my past, the longer the bench top, the more **** that accumulates on it, leaving a messy, unusable workspace. Anything I build now is no more than 6' in length. Just a thought.

realizing this thread is old, but I've got an old maple shuffleboard top that I'm going to re purpose into a workbench top . the old glue is dry & it is separating , but I will take it all apart, lay the boards on the flat (1"x3") and re laminate them .

That's genius , i'm gonna do that

Just run the edge with a table saw and it will solve the gap issue.

That said, I've never seen a 2x12 that doesn't have a bit of warp/cupping/twist/etc. in it...will never result in a flat work bench without a joiner/planer, and even then it will probably end up moving.

In the end, doubled up 3/4" plywood is much easier.

2 sheets 3/4 " then 3/4 "oak flooring. Oak flooring was 10 dollars a box in Lowe's clearance bay., counter top and shelves are from Habitat . Flooring is tight and high performance finish.

This is what just recently did. 3/4 sub base with HD laminate core flooring
Durable and easily replaced, and if you shop smart you can find some on clearance.

Home Depot lists 15/32" x 4' x 10' plywood. Cannot be shipped, and only available in some stores. Screw two pieces together for a 15/16" thick top.

At the millwork shop where I used to work, we used 2" x 6" lumber that we tongue and grooved, topped off with a sheet of 1/4" tempered hardboard. No glue in the t&g or under it, just screw it down to the base so it can move. Tack the hardboard down with brads, set just slightly. You can then easily replace just the hardboard when needed. Our benches were 8' long, though.
