I'm gonna second the LaGrange/columbus/schulenberg areas.

That area is indeed very nice. However, the Fayette Power Project near La Grange is supposedly the cause of a lot of environmental issues in the area. I've been reading news articles about hundreds of trees mysteriously dying and other weird environmental anomalies.

Another area of Texas you should look at is anything north of Conroe, TX in the Piney Woods area. Land is inexpensive, property taxes are low, and you can do just about anything you want on your land. I can't speak for the school systems, but most areas have high speed internet access unless you live WAY out there.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I am not running into any area that I cannot get what I want. I realize some of you have said "you ain't going to get that for under $500K"... Well, that depends. If I want a 4000 sf house in town, I agree. But, I am open to being in the boonies, and have found hundreds of properties in this price range.

I am mostly looking at what to expect in what areas. "Stay away from TownX, it's full of nuclear waste", "TownY is all Redneck" (waiting on **** for that one!)... "TownZ is typically very religious, and conservative"; "TownA is a hurricane magnet"...

Keep up the info guys. I will take every post in consideration when I go back soon and start to yap at real estate agents...

I live west of DFW in Parker county, great useable land and lots of space. Close to everything and next to nothing.
I grew up in Hutto, back when there was only 654 people there.....now that place is out. I would look at HWY 95 between Temple and Taylor on down to Elgin. Many good towns there Holland, Bartlett, Little River, Granger, Copeland ect.

First, if you haven't purchased one of these yet I would recommend it: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1569664218/?tag=atomicindus08-20

You can get one from any Tractor Supply in Texas as well.

Secondly, if you have driven through the state you understand that people in other states don't fully understand distance. The area you specified in your OP is bigger than most states and quite diverse. So, the first thing I did was review some of your past posts to try and determine your interests. You seem to like racing of the road racing variety. My recommendation is to try and determine a general area where you can fulfill all of your (and your families) interests/hobbies without driving long distances. Once you nail that down people on this board can probably give you good insight into the chosen area and the surrounding towns.

Let me be the first to say: Welcome to Texas.
