Suggestions for rubber work surface for tool box?

I recently acquired a KRA4107 off of Craigslist but it did not have any sort of rubber mat on top of the box. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good material that i can cut to fit the top of the box? Or am i better off just spending the $40 on the replacement mat from Snap-On?

Look at TSC they have smaller versions (same thickness) of the stall mats for about $20. You will not wear out those mats!

If you want something like it came with, go to lowes and look at the black rubber stair runner. You buy it for a few bucks a foot, and its very heavy-duty.

Do you want smooth or ribbed? stair runner as mentioned or doormats make good ribbed surfaces. not sure of a good source for smooth.

Or go all out and get an IKEA butcher block top...

Use rubber stair runner or long 'anti fatigue' matting and cut down to size.

Although I have become a convert to the Ikea butcher block worktops for roller tool cabinets.

I have used conveyor belting, you can get end pieces cut to what you need. Try an industrial rubber/gasket supplier. The stuff I got is about 1/2" thick and it wears like iron. Get them to cut it as they have the right tools to cut it. I don't think I spent over $10 to $20 but its been a long time.

I use a KRA4107D as a roll cart and use cut scraps of a truck bedliner rubber mat that I found discarded at a carwash. It has a ribbed surface that keeps sockets from rolling off and it's tough as hell.

The IKEA tops are Birch and are glued together. You are not going to hurt one of these beast.

I got some of the gym mat flooring material from a friend. Made of recycled tires. Very tough and good looking. It has colored chunks in it to make it look good. It's called Elephant Bark.

How are you fastening the butcher block to the top of the tool cabinet?

The top spans 94" from one end cab to the other. I chose to go this route vs cutting a top for each section. It looks great and functions wonderfully. I used 1/4" Masonite between the top of the tool boxes and the bottom of the Butcher Block top to give it a firm surface to rest on
