Suggestions on 18" Flex head 3/8 drive

Part of the trend toward longer ratchets may have to do with all the older guys out there, who have disposable income, bad wrists and elbows, and maybe don't have the strength they used to. I'm starting to fall into that category, and I'm not even that old yet!

I used to just reef on a short ratchet and get the job done. If I do that these days, I might find my strength lacking (especially in awkward positions), and I'll wake up the next day with sore forearms. So I try to avoid really reefing on tight fasteners, and tend to reach for longer ratchets than I used to. Similarly, I've never seen the need for XL wrenches in the past - but I've recently added some, purely for the extra leverage when needed.

That said, my longest 1/4" ratchet might be 9", longest 3/8" is about 14", longest 1/2" ~18" - so I usually move up a drive size when I need more leverage.

Probably frame of mind and equipment your working on.

20 years working on CNC equipment with socket head allen screws that were many times in very close proximity of ball screws and such favored small head ratchets with high loads. A 10 mm or 12 mm allen bit socket fit well on an 15 or 18" ratchet. Larger ones worked great on a 24" 1/2 flex head. And large 19mm or larger worked well on a 42" 3/4 ratchet although it was not a flex head.

I don't put excessive body force thru my arms and hands so I don't end up broken like I have observed so many other mechanics. I let length the lever reduce that force and lever position and will always try to use the longest ratchet possible even if it means having one ratchet to break the torque and switching to a shorter ratchet to turn it out. Long flex heads of the best many times as the flex handle can be turned 90 degrees to the ratchet head and used like a speed handle.
Fair enough. I have the heavy artillery, but rarely use it but admit there have been occasions where it has had the dust knocked off and put to work. In the OP's case, he apparently has no flex head ratchets and works on cars, I don't think he does industrial maintenance or is a millwright. My question was more about why start off with something that long? For the most part, in 3/8 drive the standard 10-13" flex heads are perfect as well as more user friendly. There are times when the reach or extra leverage of the XL is needed, but that is the exception, not the rule.

Facom JXL.171 - 9.7" to 14" (extendable)
I like the flex-head Facoms branded as Proto. I have both the 3/8 and the 1/2, and the latter is the best choice for high leverage tasks like suspension and rusty brakes.

I did a search and didn't find exactly what I was looking for. I am in need of a long flex head. Wife would like to get me one for Christmas. Of course would love a SO, Mac, or Matco, but all are quite pricey. I am not a professional mechanic, but I do quite a bit of mechanic work out of my shop. Any suggestions for a reasonably priced good quality one would be appreciated. I used the forum to recently replace my 50-200 torque wrench and your suggestions led me to a very nice one. Thanks in advance.

Side note, 18" or 24", which is a better all around user?
I believe there's one here in the classified section.
