So I acquired several wine crates...they seem like great options for organizing nuts, bolts, etc. Any suggestions/experience building a storage system out of these? I was thinking just to make a frame and add slides to the crates, but thought you guys might had some better recommendations.

American crates are usually better than the French. I was in the wine selling business 30 years ago and have a lot of old crates of all sizes hanging around. You will have to reinforce the nailing, they tend to pop after a little use, bottoms will fall out. A lot of my old ones were from famous Chateaus in good vintages and the end plates were very salable, stuff like 1966 Chateau Margaux, I would get $20 for the end plate.

I stacked some together with some finishing nails, still hangs around the basement holding stuff.

just size for your wine crates

use aluminum angle to make the crates stronger in the corners and the bottom

Yeah, they're mostly stapled together. I would be concerned about the bottom falling out, but I figure surely I won't be putting in more nuts and bolts than the bottles of wine weigh...at least not any time soon.

Any suggesting on an interesting way of stacking them?

I took the top and one long side off them and stacked them on top of each other about 8 high and then left the top on the topmost crate. This was a rudimentry wine rack 30 years ago but is now relegated to the basement where it seems to collect rifle scopes and other orphaned stuff. Thses were mostly from the 1977 vintage, not a great one so the end panels are not that collectible.

The best are the vintage port crates, I have these things holding stuff all over the basement, garage and in trucks. Reinforce the bottom attachement and put rope handles on them.

I've got a bunch of those as well that my wife bought me at a yard sale. Bought a few sticks of the aluminum angle iron from Lowes and cut it to fit all sides along the bottom. I do exactly like you do. I store organized nuts and bolts for metric, British, or American fasteners for motorcycles. They get used constantly when one or two bolts is missing. Love em.
