Hi all.

My wife wants to be able to sit outside with her friends in winter. Need a type of outdoor heating system. I’m trying to figure out how to do this.

Any suggestions will be great.

There are plenty of good natgas and electric infrared patio heaters just for your situation. A quick websearch should get you on yor way.

hi all. She wants to put curtains up for the winter. She has some friends that did that with a propane heater.

I don’t like the idea of heating with a propane heater and enclosing the space, even if a bit was left open for airflow. Just doesn’t seem right, am I the only one thinking this?

So you live in Toronto, CANADA and she wants to sit outside under an awning and be ‘comfortable’?

In the pantheon of dumb **** women think is reasonable, I guess this isn’t the WORST thing I’ve heard.

Yeah, don’t burn propane with that enclosed with curtains. Of course, it would take care of your dumb idea generator pretty quickly.

Seriously, either properly enclose that porch or move 600 miles south. Those are the best options. You’re not going to be able to throw enough BTUs at that to make it ‘comfortable’ as determined by the fairer ***.

Putting curtains around that and using a propane heater will be safe, especially if you use an indoor propane heater. Put up a CO detector if you're concerned, it's not a bad idea to have one. Either propane or electric, go with radiant. I've stood near many a radiant heater outside at bars in the dead of winter while people I was talking to smoked. Even in a thin shirt and no jacket I survived, if I was dressed properly I'd have been more than comfortable. Just be prepared to run through some propane or have your electric bill go up a little, but this isn't something you're heating 24/7 so it probably isn't a big issue.

If Toronto is like Minneapolis, many of your local bars and restaurants have set up heated outdoor areas in the last couple years for their customers. You may want to visit a few of your favorites to see what kinds of heaters they're using, it will give you an idea what is commonly available in your area. Generally, radiant will be your best choice and electric will be the simplest to install (yes, electric is more expensive to run but it the upfront cost will be less and they'll only be sitting out there intermittently, and there's no concern about carbon monoxide.) Another thought is checking out metro bus stop shelters, or the smoking shelters companies put up outside their businesses - around here many of them have electric radiant heaters that are controlled by a timer and a pushbutton.

Overstock.com has a pretty good selection of electric radiant heaters suitable for this sort of thing: https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Patio-Heaters/21120/subcat.html?featuredproduct=15372134

If your porch is on the south side of the house, simply enclosing it with clear plastic sheeting with all the gaps sealed up with tape will make it surprisingly warm out there on sunny days. We used to do this at my parent's house, and it was pretty comfortable out there in January wearing only a sweater (of course, once the sun went down the solar heating went away.)
