Help with Wilton 1750 Vise

I picked up this Wilton 1750 vise on Craigslist. I found that the main screw is really worn on the front part and also on the inside of the outside jaw where the main screw sits in is really worn too. I was thinking maybe just picking up a new spindle that has a new handle on it since this one doesn't have one. Any thoughts about fixing the inside?

Can someone tell me what this vise is made out of? I wonder if a washer or something can be welded on the inside of the jaw there?
