Hi all,
Im finally getting around to finnishing my 2 car garage. It has osb walls and one drywalled wall and the ceiling is drywall.

I know oil paint and primer is probably better for OSB but is there a primer and paint that will work well with both drywall and OSB ? Im planning on semi gloss for walls and ceiling.

Oil based primer adheres to any substrate better then water based paint primer. Once you prime the walls/ceiling with oil/shellac paint water base works well. Semi gloss is difficult to paint without see through, it shows EVERY imperfection on walls and ceiling. At this time many paint manufacturers are producing eggshell finishes which would have been semi gloss years ago, go with eggshell.

I’m partial to oil based PVA primer and oil based GLOSS paint. Easy to clean, reflects light well and is more durable than latex.

We do not use Flat Paint in our rentals or home, Rental Kitchens were Semi-Gloss and the rest of the properties were done in Eggshell; we are no longer buying Semi-Gloss and making all Interior Walls and Ceilings in Eggshell.

For Primer i like KILZ 2, but Zinzer Bullseye 123 is also good.

The interior of my tool / compressor room is OSB.

Caulked the OSB joints and then I put on two coats of Sherwin-Williams Oil primer, let it sit for 3-4 days and then 2 coats of Sherwin-Williams eggshell latex.

Time consuming but it turned out well.

That turned out real nice! I was planning on caulking my joints between boards too. Ive had about an equal amount of people tell me to use oil as I have waterbased primer. What brand did you go with?

Thanks.
I use Sherwin-Williams.
My wife has an uncle who owns a painting company. We use his account at the SW store and get a fairly good discount. The guys that work there know their business and I usually follow their recommendations.

They told me to use oil based primer on OSB because water based stuff could/will "delaminate" the OSB.

I just did what they recommended and I was happy with the way it turned out.

Causes delamination with a coat of paint?, call BS on that, houses made with OSB sit out in the rain often multiple times before sealed up.

Water based primer does not penetrate a substrate, it sits on top of any surface, oil or shellac based primer penetrates below the surface causing good adherence.

Example of the difference.....

During Sandy my area was flooded with 8 feet of water. I had primed my walls with oil base originally. All the homes with water based primer had all the joint compound seams delaminate, the walls were totaled. In my house there was no damage to the wallboard or seams . Moisture due to humidity also causes adhesion issue with water based primer. As a note I primed my wall before I taped the seams
