I was on the Summit site today and saw that they are now selling Craftsman tools. Is Sears/ Kmart expanding or are they looking to move out of the tools industry? I just thought it was odd to see.

you think that is strange I heard that Harbor Freight will soon be selling Snap-On tools.:lol_hitti

HF used to sell IR <air tools> !

dont be so surprised if it DOES happen...they have GOT to be hurting and looking for alternative sales outlets - theyve almost completely excluded the non-professional consumer the way they have distributed their products...but then i guess thats how they <try> to control price and exclusivity.

if SO was smart theyd strike up a deal w/ Sears and widen their reach...id probably buy some of their tools if i could get 'em <w/out flagging down the irregular truck> and have a way to warranty them.

No doubt the guys that are walking in to the sears TOOL stores wouldnt mind have a tool CHOICE (as proof look how many customers buy the polished craftsman wrenches and ratchets).

I don't think snap on really wants the kind of people walking into sears stores. (the same ones who like to take the satisfaction guaranteed limit to the extreme)

Also as with any other boutique/designer item, exclusivity helps maintain value and demand.

When coach purses started showing up in grocery store vending machines, it disgusted a lot of people who normally purchased the brand, and drove them to other brands.

Sears also does not do so well carrying other brands that compete with their craftsmen line, since it cuts into their margins. They never really pushed/carried much when they had SK, because it would overshadow the basic raised panel junk. They make more on their "private label" than they do reselling another brand because there are more mouths to feed.

I wouldn't suprised to see a Craftsman raised panel ratchet on the menu at Outback steak house. They are pimping those things everywhere

Is getting a beat up ratchet in exchange for your newer one a "warranty"?

Is getting a chinese wrench in exchange for your USA wrench a "warranty"?

Is being told the item is out of stock and have to wait, a warranty?

There are a lot of compromises with everyone.

i dont consider MAILING something back and WAITING a "warranty" !

well believe it or not the world doesnt revolve around you... nor me for that matter.. service comes with a price.... its like saying you shouldnt have to drive to sears to warranty the POS screwdriver for the 5th time.

on a side note, generally Snap On sends out ratchet kits, screwdriver blades etc without having to send your old stuff in first, or even at all sometimes. I've had good luck emailing there customer service center

Ive had luck "standing my ground" and demanding a new one when they try and give me a beat to **** ratchet some clown used as a hammer and turned in for a rebuild. never had to say "no, im getting a brand new one" more then twice before they said ok, never even raised my voice.

I think it would be great if Sears sold Snap-On, or any of the leading brands. Being able to walk into a retail store and compare tools and buy what you want would be awesome. You could compare brands by looking and feeling each one.

Sears DOES NOT want you feeling any other "leading" tools, or else you wouldn't buy their craftsmen line. Seriously, who would buy a clear handled screw driver if they had been exposed to anything even remotely better? Same goes with raised panel anything, or their nickle plated sockets vs the rest's chrome plating.

They do carry armstrong, but even armstrong would overshadow and steal craftsmen's thunder too much, so they have to be special ordered.

They put evolve and sheffield out there for you to compare.

I am kind of getting the vibe that Sears is ready to sell the Craftsman tool part of thier business. If they do that then that would open the store up to market and sell multiple brands without cutting into thier profit margins. Truth be told that would be good for the Craftsman brand as well. Just my 2 cents.

X2

There are a LOT of people out there that think Craftsman are the premium tool line. Not too long ago I thought Craftsman was up there. I was in a Sears looking for wrench sets and a 1/4 ratchet and saw an SK 1/4" flex ratchet hanging next to the 1/4" raised panels. I liked it a lot. It was the only SK tool I found in the whole store. Made the raised panel look like a real POS.

So I went home, got on the net, and read about SK and eventually bought a set of wrenches & sockets from them. A few years pass and I've now bought several wrench sets, screwdriver and torx driver sets, tons of sockets, several ratchets, etc from SK. Had that single 1/4" ratchet not been hanging there, I could have easily ended up with a box full of craftsman pro.

Point is, I think its in Craftsman's best interest to keep the public thinking that its HF, Kobolt, Craftsman, or nothing.

Snap On catalog says their tools are nickel-chrome plated as well...

I agree.

The C-man raised panels and standard screwdrivers (at their current price point) would still make sense for the vast number of dads that just need to assemble little Suzy’s doll stroller and replace the wheels on the lawn mower.

Meanwhile, the Pros and Pro-Wanna-bes would have access to better tools – if they are willing to pay the price difference. I would love to have access to S-O but I’m a weekend warrior and can’t even remember what their truck looks like.

Win + Win in my book.

Oh…I also heard from a friend who has an uncle in the industry, that Dairy Queen is the target outlet for the new S-K. I don’t know if it’s true; just what I may have heard. Or not.:)

you snap-on guys make me laugh !

I'm a SK, armstrong, proto, wright fan. :p I don't get so revved up about most snap on offerings, but do have an idea about how those businesses interests differ.

Pipsters, "triple chrome" does use nickle, that is well known and nothing wrong. There IS a difference when you forget to add the chrome though.

I just got a new Summit Tools and Garage Accessories catalog yesterday with a sticker on the front proclaiming the new Craftsman offerings. Actually it's the same catalog I got a couple months ago, just with the C-Man insert stapled in the middle.

Got it too, I think there are more tools in that catalog than the Sears tool Catalog. Also noticed a 1/2 set of locking extensions that I never saw in Sears cat or internet....:headscrat

This isn't unique; historically, sears has sold their tools through a number of different vendors: OSH (sears had a stake in the company if my memory serves), Fastenall, among others industrial suppliers (Sears did at one time have a industrial division that is now defunct).... it does seem that they are making a new attempt at branching out with Ace Hardware and now Summit... hell, I'm sure they figure if they can sell more tools... why not?

Not suprised too much after sears/kmart merger, then ace hardware, now summit. I personally am straying away from craftsman after seeing their latest business decisions. Just my .02.:)

FWIW, if you haven't ordered from Summit before, their shipping and customer service is top rate! Ordering on the internet doesn't get much better than Summit, IMO.

X1,000,000.....I have no idea how Summit does it, but they get stuff to me up here in VT in less than 3 days, usualy two. Any other time UPS takes at least 5 days.....Never had anything but outstanding service from Summit,

I was looking at the summit catalog to see if the would warranty the tools. This is the warranty policy from the website;

Most parts are warranted by the manufacturer, usually for 90 days from the date of purchase, unless specified otherwise. All warranties are included with your order.

Parts used for racing or competition are warranted against manufacturers' defects only. They are not warranted for wear or breakage under any circumstance.

If you are returning electrical parts for warranty consideration, please send us an email before shipping parts back. Our agents can help to determine if warranty claim is valid and where the part needs to be sent. You can also call 1-800-230-3030 or 330-630-3030 to speak to a Customer Service representative.

Any part which, in our opinion, shows evidence of being used or installed contrary to manufacturer's instructions, and/or subjected to improper handling, packaging, or shipping by the customer will not be eligible for exchange, refund, or warranty consideration. We reserve the right to charge a restocking fee or refuse any exceptions.
We cannot accept returns on custom-ordered parts. Videos and software cannot be returned for a refund once opened.

It looks like if you buy it from Summit, you will still warranty it at sears.

Just a thought.

Why SO does it. They offer the RWD cataloge with different lines frome gear wrench, to hazet. IR to otc and others. They don't have a problem selling other brands. Why? because some of the vendors that they have displays of are also some of the ones that make the "Blue Point" line
