I've recently purchased a Sun-105 infra two exhaust analyzer and I'm wondering if: 1) anyone on the forum has any experience with this unit. 2) anyone has suggestions as to where I could obtain an operator's manual. 3) where I can find maintenance service in the SoCal area. I've searched the Internet pretty extensivly and can't find any information on this machine. I plan on telephoning SnapOn tools, but aren't sure they'll be much help considering this unit is circa 1984.

Never used that machine but have used some other brands. Two gas units don't work with cat converters on the car. They were designed for cars with carbs, exhaust without cats etc. They would monitor "CO" which is high when mixture is too rich, and "HC" for gas that has not been burned-spark misfire for example. These were very effective on cars up unitl about 1982 when computers started trying to monitor these and control them from oxygen sensor input. If you work on cars prior to 1980 or so this would help but even most of them are getting crate engines with newer controls that this would not work on. Nice looking in a man cave but not much use anymore.

Thanks very much for the information Milton. I've got a 78 and an 84 that I'm planning on using this machine on. The 78 is carbureted and is a California car so it does have a CAT and the 84 is fuel injected. The machine looks like it's circa 84, and so I figured it would work with an 84.

This unit should work on cars with cats. You just need to tap in ahead of the cat. Some cars for a number of years even had removable plugs in the exhaust pipe ahead of the cat to attach a probe. Since you're working on your own cars it'd be easy to weld on a bung to attach the probe. I too just bought one of these Infra Two units but haven't played with it yet.

You're correct. This particular unit has a function for enhanced resolution which is supposed to enable it to detect small amounts of HC and CO. I recently saw that one of VW's factory manuals sited using this exact unit and that was for a 1989 VW Jetta.

Thought I had you covered for a minute. I have an old Sun operators manual and just went to the garage to look but it's for an 800/900 scope.

As for service on it, there is a guy in the Phoenix area that does smog tester repair and calibration. I don't know him, have never dealt with him, but have seen his ads on CL.

His name is Gary - 480-580-2014 (DrSmogTest.com)

Hi.
Have worked on some of these, but lost my documentation.
Have one that I use often, works quite well.
There is a sticker with a patent number inside, and the patent description is a good start.
Clean the mirror, gas tubes, filters and also the two sensors from contamination.

Be careful with the sensors and the optical filters ( looks like small pieces of colored glass) in front of them. VERY hard to find replacements.

The pump is easy, disassemble, clean and refit. Maybe you need a new membrane, can be easily made.
And the Beckman GURU ( " I was the goto guy there") who designed this for SUN has been on this forum off and on. Fantastic guy! Beckman was top of the line for chemical analysis instruments.

Hello,

I also got a Sun 105 exhaust analyzer... Trouble is it completely hose less. Not a hose connection in the box. Is there any idea what connects to what?

Any help would be great.

So does anyone have an idea what the tubing should be looking like? Unfortunately I purchased unit without any tubing so no idea in that. The pump was a better giving me the tubing system looking so I was able to redo without any problems.

Then there's this value or something not sure what this does or how this works the numbers are not found.

This picture is side pictures but its up and down and not side.

Thanks for the pictures from what you posted the hose system have been replaced also on your equipment and you don't use the high flow output. That makes things easier, thanks.

disneyjoe7- you may already be aware of this, but you can not use any old tubing. There is/was a specific type that had to be used, otherwise 'standard' tubing you'd find at the auto parts or hardware stores (rubber, nylon, polyethylene, etc.) would contaminate the gas readings. I apologize for throwing that warning out there without being able to tell you what you need to track down, but I have it written down somewhere from years ago, and sadly, have no idea where to look for the note.

Kansei,

I used a tubing that resist gasoline and oil feel that was best. Metric 5mm / 7mm outside. Worked good but drain out from the first filter is larger and the gas refer input is smaller.

I have the sun-105 with the manual but I need a diagram of how all the hoses hook up in the pump box or just a picture of inside the box that's under the shelf.
