Hello. I am going to look at a Sun 1115 Analyzer Friday. I have never used one before and am curious if anyone has ever used this model and might be able to give me some advice.

I am particulary interested in wheather this unit will work with HEI type distributors. I have several streetrods that all have carburated small blocks with HEI distributors.

Also am interested in finding a manul for this unit if I buy it.

Thanks.

If it's this machine here, yes there is an adapter that screws on to read HEI.

Yes it does look like the pic you posted but I don't think it has the box in between the cabinets that yours has, (Sun Magnetic Timing).

Can you enlighten me on that box? And you feel that I can use this with HEI ignitions?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Couple shops I worked in had these. Yes they work with General Motors HEI.
WE never had the Sun Magnetic Timing, but from what I recall there was a hole in the timing gate that you put a probe in, and it would read the timing without using a timing light.
There was one for sale near here pretty reasonable, but I just don't have room for it.
I don't think this machine can be upgraded for DIS , but I am not certain.
Thanks,
Tony

Be sure to check that it has all the test cables - I think the green amp probe is quite expensive if it is missing and both units I purchased online were missing that one. Also the plastic tubing inside for the exhaust sniffer becomes very brittle over time.

Guys I'm lost when it comes to this machine. Never had one never operated one.

It sure would be helpful to have a clear idea of all the cables etc. that I should look for. As well any thing else that should be included to allow it to operate correctly.

Hopefully someone can help me soon as I'm checking it out tomorrow and it is about two and a half hour drive for me so I will either buy it tomorrow or not.

Thanks,

Brent,

The price sounds okay, if it works. I would have the seller hook it up to something and show you that it works. There are several guys around my area with these machines. I think that I promised someone a copy of my manual, so I should be copying it soon.

SUN 1115 is a rather competent , old style , tester. The quality of the SUN machines wen it comes to design, manufacturing, components is first class.
I have a 2110 which is the first menu-based digital tester around.
A few things, although I do not know any particulars of the 1115 and the picture posted shows only general view:
The CO/HC meter is an IR based unit with rok solid electronics. BUT the two sensors and their optical filters are tricky, spares are generally impossible to get: There is a uy on this board who helped me out, he had the 2 last in the universe!
The HT clamp ( big shiny chromed part) is marvellous and lets you study the ignition waveform on the CRT.
The magnetic timing pickup needs to be put against the flywheel at 20 degrees BTDC. You can then read the ignition advance on the scope. Works great.
The green AmpClamp is a very early application of a Hall sensor when it comes to automotive electronics. If undamaged mechanically it will work.

The test cable plug in at sockets on the cable boom. The connectors used are really solid stuff, but will be hard to find new, I think. But there are modern stuff that will do the job.

SUN was cuttng edge in all aspects of electronics. So , some of the sensor semiconductors used ( if there is an electronic MAP gauge like on mine) can be hard to find, But there are modern replacements, and with a bit of tweaking all will be well.

It is a nice piece of period tester and will elevate the status of your garage immensly, from an aestethic point of view.. If uou are into the cars of the 50/60´s its great.

My 2110 sits unused more than 364 days of the year. But it looks super. And when I ocasionally get a 70´s MB to fool around with it does the job better than any other tester.

The 1115 in the picture above belongs to me and works great except for the gas analyzer. I paid $100 for it which was a very good deal so my guess is you won't go wrong paying $250 if it works.

The only long term problem with these machines is when they break, parts are hard to find and manuals are few and far between.

If anyone is looking for parts, manuals or anything else for these testers, contact Robert Masters.

http://www.distributortester.com/

I've bought a few parts from him for my distributor machine and have talked to him regarding a couple other machines. He seems to have a lot of manuals and repair information.

Looked at it today and it is pretty nice in appearence. It does work as much as I can tell. He only has two cords/cables.

He was at 200.00 on the cost but I'm not sure about the missing cables.

Can all of these accessories be bought and at what cost?

I would consider any unit for sell that you guys know is good and complete.

Thanks,

Brent

Hi again.
The shiny large ignition voltage clamp ( head is some 3"x2"x1") and the smaller ignition clamp that goes on the cyl 1 HT lead are mandatory if you want to use the ignition scope. Without these two, I see very little use of the machine.
And they will most likely be hard to find.

The green DC clamp to read cranking amps or charging amps is quite useful, also that will be a bit hard to locate, I guess.

The 2110 I have is now used so seldom that I try to palm it off, but no takers so far.
Might convert it to a hot-dog stand:drool:

If anyone is interested I have a Sun 1120 Tester for sale. It appears to be complete and does need some TLC. I havent tested it yet. All my older cars are in Nashville and I am in Memphis.

We used to have a similar Sun analyzer in the old race shop. Never used it once. Jeff sold it with all the cables & manuals for about $100.00...

Fortunately/unfortunately, these things have very little resale value. There was a much newer, PC-driven one with repair DVDs through 2000-something near me for $250. Everything worked except for the exhaust analyzer, which just needed a new sensor (lasts a couple of years, costs about $50 to replace). I was tempted and even went to look at it, but I had no time, room, or way to unload it once I got home. Maybe someday...
