Sun burned at the auction

A friend who does auctions told me about an auction at a large truck repair shop, He thought I might be interested in the lista cabinets that was being auctioned off. So after taking a day of vacation to go see this auction. They had 17 cabinet height lista cabinets for sale, lots of tools and machines. So looking into my tool buying account I found that I could afford to go. I held off buying any thing being the cabinets were up almost last. I passed up two sets of 1 inch drive snap on chrome sockets sets with the ratchet, breaker bar, extentions and air impact for 500.00 each. Knowing that I would most likely never use them. Lots of tools that I didn't have any Ideal of what they were for. So they got to the cabinets. I told my friend that I would open with a bid of 50.00 per drawer as he was the one to auction off the cabinets. No joy, all went crazy high prices. So I am getting ready to leave and I hear them say some thing about a pallet of tools that had a Wilton vice on it, And my arm automatically raised and I bid and won the pallet. Cost me 65.00 with fee's. When I went to load out I discovered that the sun was not the only thing that had burnt me...
If you can not see it, the whole jaw has been broken and welded back together.

Are the vice grips at least good ones?

Sometimes you get, sometimes you get got. I don't let it stress me out when it happens.

I've gotten a welded vice off Ebay where the seller said it was perfect.

On the other hand, my first Wilton bullet was at a horse auction, from the trinkets wagon. Bid against a guy and I got it cause it was rusty and the jaw was stuck.

Just took a hit with the heel of my hand to free it. $40

Keep on looking and get as particular as you can.

yeah! apparently that is how vidmar, lista etc cabinets are priced...by the drawer. guess thats how you make someone a "reasonable" offer on one, count the drawers and multiply by X amount of dollars

Actually I don't think you did bad. Prob could flip the Wilton for $50 on CL. It's still a vise.

If you don't already then that would make a good vise for sloppy stuff or for out side or for a truck. I got a 5 in usa cman last week with a 4in buffalo for $5, big chunk was broken off the base but I am just gonna use it for wood, and abusive stuff I don't want to my 9400 for. I was drilling a hole in a block of wood with a spade bit and I nicked the slide, almost had a coronary.

9 times out of 10 any public sale that lists as an "equipment" or a "tool" sale is outright a waste of time as everyone goes and gets a "bigger ****" attitude

You can sell the swivel base on EBAY for as much as you paid for the whole lot. The spindle, end cap and jaws will sell for good money as well.

Well, you learned a lesson on auctions. Get there early and look at everything; and when and if you bid on something, make sure you know what it is and its condition before hand.

If the vise is functional, you could always used it as a beater vise. Any needed for a vice outside on a pedestal? I see a good candidate for that.

That's why I don't hardly bother with auctions, too many other people with deeper pockets than mine. As for the vise, I would bolt it down and beat on it like it owed me money........ Which technically it does! Believe it or not, while it is ugly it will still do the job.

Went to a tool auction once, and that was the last time. They had a few tools, but 80% if the the stuff was brand-new, still cellophane-wrapped boxes of sockets, wrenches, drivers, etc. you name it. All Chinese junk like you might find in the $1 bin at a hardware store. Big ripoff of my time.

Went to a tool auction once, and that was the last time. They had a few tools, but 80% if the the stuff was brand-new, still cellophane-wrapped boxes of sockets, wrenches, drivers, etc. you name it. All Chinese junk like you might find in the $1 bin at a hardware store. Plus a big bunch of hydraulic presses, drill presses, and so on, about the quality of HF junk and priced way high, brand-new still in boxes. In other words, not really an auction at all. Big waste of my time and gas.

Well I gave the vice away, A friend who has one that has a broken base, So I took mine over and put its base on his. Now he is very happy. He did end up giving me a Waterloo model# JL-70 machinist tool box that he had picked up at a yard sale this weekend. Good shape out side but new inside. Even the divider are still in the package they came in.
