Sun RAM X1 Dyno assistance.

hi folks,
Further to my introduction message posted earlier, i came here from several links to other Suntester threads.

I am desparate for any assistance on my Road-A-Matic ( RAM ) X1 dyno. Particularly diagrams and fault finding/calibration procedures. I can go in depth in the issues im having, but ive got pages and pages i would have to summarise on here.

The problem is that this unit is so old that there are very people who remember or know about them. Ive had several leads to people across the US and UK, but have never came to anything.

Ive gone about as far as i can on my own without making things worse or breaking it further.

i also have a Sun MEA1500 and an DGA1800 analyser. I have repaired the DGA but not started on the MEA yet.

The data recording *****, but the Eddy brake controller and 5 gas work great.
Here is what I will be doing as soon as I have time,I have bought the upgrade, and will do a thread to show how it goes.

yours looks a LOT newer, the strain gauge looks like an X12 but the 5 gas is maybe just a USA thing? I have looked at upgrading, but there is actually very little wrong with the one i have. It just needs a good calibration. Its a lot of money to spend just because i cant get a manual. Iive set up the PSU board and the setup the analogue dials, but the analogue voltages at mid scale are wrong and i dont know how to adjust them.
There are so many trim pots on the main board, i have no idea what each one does so i dont want to go twiddling to investigate them and make it worse.

If you can get to the circuitboard try to find if it lists on the company who manufactured it, many of times the actual company who made that board is in copper under the soldermask(green stuff). This may allow you to try and track down some info, many of the circuitboard shops in the US have gone out of business but some are still around. If you can get that name PM it to me and I'll see if I have contacts there who may be able to locate the artwork (films or files), from those you would have the circuit layout which would help lead to finding out which pots do what.

Years ago I was the corporate plant engineer of one the largest printed circuitboard companies in the US who had multiple plants doing single, double sided and multiple-layer boards, from there I went to largest tooling vendor who designed and built the stamping tools that pinched over 80% of the circuitboard a in the US including the big 3 auto manufactures, so with I have some inroads to many of the producers.

I know it's a long shot, or another potential route is to take pictures of the board and post it here and at a few of the electronics forums, most circuitboards follow standard design for its vintage based in its component architecture, I used to use OrCAD which was an industry standard for circuit design before moving into other programs, but I think through the collective knowledge base we have on GJ we may be able to assist.

If I am not mistaken, the Sun Ram dyno's were made by Clayton, the rollers at least. Search ebay for the Sun Ram, you may find a manual, or even get some info. Does the control unit have a model number or serial number? Google the numbers, never know what may turn up.

I have searched all usual avenues for a manual or the information required and will continue to do so.
As TheGrooveKing has said, the next step is to reverse engineer the board.

The tracks appear to be hand drawn (pic link below). There is no makers name other than a small symbol (top left of pic) which i have been unable to identify. If anyone can identify it then i will try and find the manufacturers and approach them for more information.

tracing the tracks on the topside will not be impossible, but will be laborious as will tracing the many wires and their functions to the hand controller and other boards. I will leave this option until a very last resort (although not quite as last resort as ripping it out and upgrading the whole control and DAQ system).
