Hello Folks,

Just picked this ol Sun scope up at a dealership. Just like the one I started with back in the day. Now sure if it works or not. Part of it powers up. My son wants to slice the face off it and stretch it out and install a flat screen were the the scope screen is. Not sure what going to happen. But no matter what, the price was right, Free.

I'm plenty old enough to remember seeing those around the dealerships and the shops but exactly what can you diagnose on that thing (assuming it is all working).

I'm just curious but does timing, vacuum, etc.

I'm guessing it doesn't do OBD?

Looks like a nice find.

Well LSU, it told you the engine vacuum, timing and advance (you point the gun) later ones had inductive pick-up. Dwell, volts, co with the 2 gas exhaust analyzer. The scope will tell you the condition of the spark plugs, plug wires, ignition coil, and carburetor adjustment. And if you know what to look for, basic engine condition.

So really this machine told the mechanic all the data. And he processed that to find the problem. So I guess that made him the OBD unit.

I guess, really it’s just an out dated tool that going in my new ol’ shop!
Or the new entertainment center for the basement.

Please dont cut it up, these are getting hard to find now. Save and teach younger people about how things worked back then.

Re: Sun Scope Freebe!

i learned how to use an old one just last year to get a 1922 Davis running properly after a motor rebuild. It was an absolute must have to watch spark, points and vaccum and rpm all at once. It has become sort of a go to machine for all the cars we have ( 10-pre1960!) when there are issues. Just hook it up and check everythign at once to see where to start troubleshooting.

nice score!

Re: Sun Scope Freebe!

I kinda want to make it run again. Don't really need to, but kinda hated to see it go for scrap. The young guys at the dealership did know what to think when the SM and myself explained to them what this ol girl could do.

I used one just like that to do tune-ups in an Accu-tune store in San Jose, CA, back in the late 1970's. Even got my first Smog certification on that vintage of machine, but with the dwell and HC sniffer options..

Sweet deal you got there.

I "learned' on the Sun 1020. Went to school in Milwaukee at Sun. I kinda browse for one just to have for nostalgia, checking craigslist. I seem to remember that your infro-red came after the 1020.

A friend has a Sun distributor tester cabinet (using it for a tool box and won’t sell it). Seems he needs some parts I have and really don't need any more. And his dad has the tester setting in his garage doing nothing. Ask if his dad wanted / would sell it. "Heck my dad never sells anything.......he gives it away!" Let’s see if we can't bundle some of this deal together.

Now the waiting part.

You can get parts and such for those things. Super neat stuff! A friend of mine has a Sun distributor tester. Very cool. Flat screen idea is kinda cool if you don't need the diagnostic ability.

Used this model while working for a dealership back in the mid 70's only it was mounted on an overhead trolley so it could be rolled from one mechanic to another 10 bays down when needed and spin 180 deg to be used by the guys across from you. Held up remarkably well for the use it got. As for the flat screen idea, sounds good but you still have to figure a way to interface it with what you got. Analog to digital may take a bit of tinker'n. Nice find.

i have a sun investigator. bought it in the early 90's for 1500 from a local shop that was upgrading. everything still works. I mostly use it for testing charging systems in lieu of a vat40 or such. I have a carbon pile to load the charging system, then moniter voltage and amps on the sun machine. I work on older stuff pretty regularly so this machine will stay with me a long while.
