The Below documents are from a recently purchased SUN Electric Corporation Volt Ampere Tester VAT-40 that I picked up in North Ridgeville, Ohio. I paid way to much for this machine about $150.00 to much but I wanted the stack of paperwork that came with it. I was not happy with the quality of the scans that I had received from snap-on, the graphics were non-legible and to me being able to make a document look like new was unacceptable. So here is my latest work some completely restored to new condition and searchable PDF documents. Please Enjoy! Jacko :bounce:

When I got laid off from Sun Electric in 1988 as Customer Service Rep, one the meters of the VAT-40 cost $150.00. The Vat-40 was one of the first clamp-on ammeter testers available in the US. It also had diode stator testing capabilities. In my opinion, you made a great purchase. It is still a sought after tester and can be used on any car made today.

Dear 94yj: The VAT40 was a very good Volt Amp Tester, but the meters, amp lead, and plastic battery clamps were common problems and many times, the customer would not pay the high repair cost. Sun manufactured their own meters and there was a problem with the ground on the movement that was never resolved. The amp lead had its share of problems that was usually a broken wire, or the laminations of the head of the pickup would peel off. The plastic battery clamps broke constantly and was eventually replaced with the big Mueller clips. That was the immediate fix in the field. Another problem was the voltmeter wires that were inside the battery cables. It was designed to measure the voltage drop between the battery and the volt input to the circuit board. The wire was a 18-16 gauge wire, don't remember which, but it would break fairly often which would prevent voltage readings through the battery leads. The fix for this was jumper the battery cable. You probably won't find any new parts for it but you can buy used VAT40s from various outlets. I bought a digital DC ammeter for mine. My ammeter never worked when I bought it used.
