Sunex 1/4" deep magnetic spring loaded sockets

I've been eyeing these for a week or so and was wondering if any of you have them, and what you think.

I'm replacing a good portion of my daily use stuff for interior and trim work.

My second choice is a mix of Wiha and Vim long, short, magnetic and hollow shaft nut setters.

Was also wondering if anyone has seen sockets like these in chrome. I think I saw some from APEX but crazy expensive.

Those sk extensions are awesome. I've been using them a few years now. I can't comment on the magnetic sockets but I have 3/8 and 1/2 sunex sockets and have never had a problem with any of them

Does the locking mechanism ever give you clearance troubles where a regular extension and socket wouldn't?

I the snap on version.. and they look quite similar as the SK, and I dont have clearance problems. The socket is bigger anyway. I also have the 1/4" magnetic set in Gray pneumatic.. which is probably pretty darn similar to the Sunex. Sometime stuff get stuck between the magnet and socket causing the magnet to stick in the bore.. just blow them clean with air. Ive had the high use sockets(10mm, 8mm) spring break inside the socket and the magnet would fall out. The Matco truck will warranty them.. not sure if they will do the Sunex.

Ooooh, those SK extensions are nice. I did not know SK made those for the 1/4" impact drivers. I must get those some day ! I have some Sunex impact sockets and they are good but I don't have those. - Paul

I love my sunex impact sockets.. I wish i had known about the magnetic ones. Anyone know of anyone that makes non-impact sockets with magnets? I just havnt had much luck with the magnetic extensions

Sunex impact sockets are pretty fantastic. The magnet would be nice for some glow plugs I need to do soon. I wouldn't have to worry about how I'm going to snake them out. I wonder though if I could just stick a small magnet into the socket. I think that should work about the same? I'll give it a try when I do the swap.

I've tried that before but sometimes the magnet ends up sticking to the bolt/nut when you are done. The only other thought I've had was adding glue inside to help hold it in but I really don't like the idea of putting glue in a socket.

I have this same issue with the cheap HF nut driver bits. They work great for a month or so then the magnets start coming out. Best ones I've ever had were the snapon impact ones but now that I do mostly interior work they are too thick for some applications.

That's my usage too, I was worried about them being too thick, but it doesn't seem like anyone makes them in chrome. I've been using those HF ones for a while, getting tired of them falling apart, so I'm trying to decide between these and some Wiha and Vim nut setter bits, but I can't find anywhere near a complete set.

Sunex and SnapOn sell them individually. The Sunex are on Amazon for $10-$15 a piece, and the SnapOn ones are a bit over $30.
I've had good results with masking tape actually, when I had no magnetic option and thought I'd lose a bolt. Put it over the socket end, when you press the socket on, the tape tears into the socket, making it a tight fit on your fastener.

On the magnets coming out of the sockets, whatever brand, use EPOXY! Epoxy if you have not used it is 10x better than any other glue. When done, the epoxy will bond stronger than wood, more like aluminum to whatever you glue. The magnet will stay. Must be 2 part epoxy, not any 1 part as 1 part is not truly epoxy. JB Weld is good, but I've found Gorilla Glue 2 part epoxy is actually even stronger than JB Weld and recommend it (and all US Made Gorilla Glue products). Give it a try. - Paul

I don't know why anyone need 1/4" drive impact sockets !

I love my Sunex flip lug net set. I just wish they made it in 3/8" drive or at least made a 3/8" to 1/2" short extension for use with the flip sockets.

This is what I use for work.. I wanted to use/keep a small 12v impact with me while I was up in the bucket working.. It needed to be the most versatile impact I could use for space limitations and offer the most beneficial features for what I do and needed. I went with the dewalt 12v max impact driver for a few reason.. It's the most comfortable handle, you don't need to depress the chuck to insert new bits, had the largest belt hook, the best lighting, and was more than strong enough (just as strong as my m12). Also, being the impact driver, it could do both screwdriver bits and sockets with a pin lock adapter, and there was nothing to fall out from 20 feet up in the air..

Bought these sockets - needed to be impact sockets for the pin lock retention hole they have. These were the cheapest I could find, and have worked fine for me, even removing 50+ year old hardware that's been rusting outside for years.

Not magnetic, but only $27 for the set..

And bought a bunch of used apex 1/4" hex to 1/4" square drive adapters with pin lock detents off eBay for about $2.50 a piece (from a own shop listing) and installed them on my most used sockets. Every socket has it own adapter (I use about 4 or 5 sizes) and it also doubles as a small extension. This keeps everything from falling off, dropping, getting lost, but most important, the sockets and adapters CANT drop 20 feet and hit a car or someone underneath me.

This has worked the best for me, and gets the most out of my 12v max impact driver.. Those SK adapters basically do the same thing, without having to buy a handful, but you would still have to be carefull they don't accidentally release. Not such a problem for most of you guys though.

Not the same as the sockets & extensions you're shopping, but they're another seemingly applicable option. Lots of different lengths available and mm coverage in 7, 8, 10, and 12 through 14.

Those look pretty sweet. I'd bet they're the only one of their kind. Too bad they're so expensive. I was looking at them and came across the Koken nut setter with u-joint, something else I had no idea existed.

Apex makes sockets like that also.. They can be found on eBay.. I've seen them with 7/16 hex sized drives for utility work, but pretty sure they can be found in standard drives too..
