Anyone own one? I don't have a bench grinder. I wonder if this would be a good pickup.

Sunex (SUN5002A) BENCH GRINDER 8IN

$45.82 + free shipping
$185.66 You save $139.84 (75%)

Looks like Amazon and most other places have it over 100 still. Never tried Sunex power tools but I am going to give this a try.

Nothing special about that grinder except an exorbitant MSRP. You can still buy essentially the same grinder for about the same price at Northern Tool (minus the lamp):

Less horsepower, amps, and no light. Probably not noticeable by someone like myself but it doesn't have that deal factor that drives most of my impulse purchases from this thread. I'm wondering if they actually sold out on rakuten or if the vendor had a technical error with the price.

Thanks for pointing out an alternate though.

The amps make all the difference, and you are right: 5 amps vs 2.1 :shocking:

That's a $hitload of a difference. At 2.1 amps, the thing probably wouldn't even start spinning if you were holding something against it. I've read this complaint somewhere, I think when I was reading up on Ryobi bench grinders.

Very few bench grinders would start under any load. Most are split-phase and have little start up torque. I can easily hold the wheel on my 5 amp Baldor and keep it from starting, and it takes a few seconds to spool up to speed. Ditto for many non-cap-start "block" grinders. Only cap-start grinders have any real torque to speak of.

That said, there really should never be a 2.1 amp grinder, let alone strapped with 8" wheels!

ok, I stand corrected about the amperage of the HFT vs Sunex 8" grinder, but where do you get 2.1A? The HFT site says 3.6A? Funny thing... the HFT site also says:

product weight: 29.9 lbs
shipping weight: 27.05 lbs

I guess they remove a few things when they ship the product? ;-P

They're talking about the Northern Tool model. And Yeah, I'm not sure what's up with those weights.
