Working on a project that is going to require a "super duper" HD hinge. Not really a "door hinge" but a point where 2 plates can pivot against each other. From SketchUp

Capture1.JPG Capture2.JPG Capture3.JPG

Those "plates" are 3/8" stainless. They are welded to sections of a 1-1/8" bar drilled for a 3/8" bolt (note the weld fillets in the drawing).

It will be installed in the orientation shown in the third attachment. The top plate will be bolted to a heavy gauge piece of aluminum square tubing that will be about 4' long. The end of that aluminum tubing will see about 300 lb load.

There will be an adjustable "stop" running parallel to the hinge pin, between the 2 plates. The whole point of this is to allow easy/quick adjustment to the angle between to 2 plates. Previous attempts with 1/8" plate BENT !

Any other way of approaching this problem ?

Should I "punt" and just make up a bunch of wedge shims and bolt the top and bottom plate to them with no pivot ?

Without seeing the overall design and how exactly they are being loaded, your design should be just fine, if not a bit over complex. Typically on heavy duty hinges, only three lugs will suffice, two on the fixed side and one central on the pivot side. Even better if the fixed sides are bored for a slight press and pivot side has a bearing of some type. Or the other way around. The way you are loading the hinge shear of the pin will be the biggest concern as it appears you are removing the face to face thrust component of a typical door hinge installation.

I'd go with a bigger pin or a smaller plate size.

That thing is massive!

quite a while ago someone posted on the weldigng web on their method of making heavy duty hinges like that. I believe the guy welded flat stock to pipe or tubing, then sliced them to length as needed and used a pin...I can't find the thread but recall it was a pretty efficient way of doing it...maybe some here remembers the post or who it was, I think a lot of those guys migrated over here...
