Hi folks. My trusses are on 4 ft center, garage is 30x40 w/10ft ceiling. I'm thinking of putting 1/2" drywall on the ceiling. I'm thinking of using 12ft sheets. My question is, given the 4ft distance of the trusses, should I add support for the edges? I am running it so that only 3 sheets plus one 4ft section will be needed for the length of the shop. Your thoughts, advice and or opinions welcomed.:)

I personally think you need strapping on 2 foot centers running perpindicular to the existing joists to fasten the drywall to. This would also support the edges. 4 feet is a long span for drywall, and you are not gonna like the results when it sags or falls.

The drywall will not stay up on four foot centers. The strapping is the best bet if you are
using drywall. Even metal liner panels would be questionable if you were to insulate later.

at 4', i would run 2x4 strips 2' oc at the least. personally, if you can afford it, i would run them 16" oc. 1/2" Sheetrock 2' oc will sag and crak over time. I dont know about 5/8

I did 2x4 cross lenghts across the span on my garage, and i used 5/8 sheet rock so far no sagging... i also cut each and every board between the trusses!! instead of putting it over top and loosing the extra height (which was a huge consirn for me) id go with 5/8 if you can more work but better for you in the long run.

I have a feeling if the trusses were put on 4' centers they weren't engineered for a drywall ceiling

I used furing strips on 2 ft centers then used 4x8 sheets of the 1 inch insulation board. Very light and insulated the building very well. Unless appearance is very important. I did this in an old shed with 2x6 oak ceiling joists. You have to use the nails with the plastic washers. The building is now really easy to heat.

The standard for trusses is for the bottom chord to support 10 lbs. per square foot of dead load, enough for drywall. For a 2 foot span, you would need 5/8 wallboard or high strength 1/2. Neither is rated for a 4 foot span.
