As part of a larger project, I’m replacing the bottom course of siding and flashing along the foundation here.

Right now, the flashing is flat, allowing water (ice, snow) to get at the bottom edge of the siding. New bottom will be Azec PVC, and I’m going to make new flashing with about a 30* slope away from it.

I‘m debating whether to just do the flashing, or if I should first rip a PVC 1x3 to put under it. Just flashing seems like it’ll be too easily damaged. I could also be overthinking the problem.

What would you do?

I'd probably just use what's there and space the pvc up about a 1/4", which really shouldnt matter since it wont be effected by moisture.

if replacing, make sure it is spaced out a little from the face of your footing, so the drips don't roll back against the footing.

I picked this idea up years ago off This Old House--Tommy daSilva used to complain that everyone put drip edge too close to the face of the material below--his suggestion was to space it out about a finger's width as you are attaching. This is easy enough to do just by curling your fingers underneath as you staple or nail it up.

Tom Silva doesn't know as much as he thinks he does. Granted he is a smart man, but some of the stuff he does, it's like, WTF?
what that does is create a nice place for bees, wasps, and various other things to build a nice comfy nest .
did he not hear of putting a small 45° bend outwards along the bottom edge like msny people do?
