supporting large melamine shelves (31x46)

I have a couple of closets in my garage that are 31"w x 46"d on the inside. I plan to rip some melamine shelves to fit and support them along the back and side walls with a 2x4 screwed to the studs. Along the front is a 36" bifold opening. I was thinking about running some angle iron across the center and front to support the shelves by notching a "v" in the top of the side 2x4's for the angle iron to sit in. This way the rounded edge is down and won't cut someone reaching in. Any thoughts on this or other suggestions? Thanks!

First, a 2x4 is way overkill. A 1x2 is fine for the edge support. I think the metal edge guards Steevo suggested would work good. A piece of angle running across would also work.

I did this in all of my closets. For the reinforcement I just used a strip of 3/4 pine ripped to 1" wide and ran it underneath the front edge. Drywall screws and a bit of glue and have never had an issue.
