Surface rust on Bendpak HD9

I have had my HD9 installed in my garage for about 2 years now and I noticed some surface rust forming on the edges of the foot plates. I am not concerned for now but I do not want this to become a bigger issue over time as my garage does see moisture from wet cars etc. and road salt during the winter months. I have a racedeck floor tile under the foot plates so moisture up from the cement is not a concern.

I was thinking in the spring I would remove the surface rust and try to spray a fresh coat of paint on the bottoms of the foot plates w/o having to take the entire lift apart by simply raising the posts off the ground a few inches with the castor kit. Has anyone done this? Also, after the new coat of paint is applied, what about wrapping the foot plate in a 3m paint protection film like a clear bra for cars to prevent this from happening again.

Has anyone done anything like this? Do you see any downsides to trying? I know there are many of you who have had lifts for much longer than I, how do you take care of this situation? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Got any pics?

I put two in late 08 sitting on bare concrete with no visible signs on them. I just moved one to the adjacent bay 2 months ago with the caster kit and no signs then either, looks like new still.

What I the chemical that turn rust into black coating? It's of the product I am seeing is a gel that needs to be removed or a dip bucket that will not work given the size.
