I want to mount a power strip outlet on my workbench, do i need surge protection or a certain amount of jouls? Basically, just be using it for some lights and power tools.

Lights and electric motors don’t really benefit from surge protection - within reason. A huge surge is going to do bad things.

But if you’re plugging anything electronic in - anything from a radio to computer or such - then it is a benefit.

Surge protection is primarily designed to protect sensitive electronic items. What you need for a work bench is just a simple over load device, which is already being provided from the power source breaker panel, under normal situations. Too much protection is better than none or too little.

Only real disadvantage I can think of is that a electronic equipment multi-plug strip has receptacles that are not really ' rugged" like a workbench environment needs. The constant plugging in and unplugging of tools, will weaken the contacts in the plug strips receptacles and they will lose the needed, "tension" to grip the male plug cap's prongs (blades) tightly to give good electrical transfer. jmo

Search for industrial power strip. Box stores have them around $40. I have just screwed right through the front of a normal power strip to attach them to the face of my work bench. Been there "temporary" 3 years no problems.
Here is industrial at Amazon.
