I followed a local auction today, the equipment from a local manufacturer. Man, I wish I had more floor space.

Wondering if these are all three phase power? If so, that eliminates a lot of potential bidders.

IMCA38, I'm in the process of acquiring a pre WWII Delta 3 phase 17" Drill Press, so I tried a little learning opportunity.
I bought a 1 hp 3 phase motor for $20 from a local scrapper and then purchased this vfd from Galco:
https://www.galco.com/buy/KB-Electronics/KBVF-23D
I didn't know if the motor even worked, but it started up right away with total speed control using the include potentiometer.
It was a fun experiment and gave me the confidence to pursue the Delta.
120v single phase converted to 240v 3 phase for less than $200 bucks. Magic in a box!

Very few people have the space or the electrical for stuff like this, so I'm not really surprised. Hell, you'd need a truck, trailer and a crane just to get it in to your shop.

Agree with m6z.
I watched a 1000 lot auction last weekend, online and in person, that has mostly automotive and hand tools. I was blown away at the high prices.
I bought one item that was not described correctly but still had to pay up a bit more than anticipated. Almosy everything else was just stoopid prices.

-It might have once, but not anymore. VFDs, static phase converters and rotary converters are common and comparatively inexpensive these days, and a good VFD adds a nice bit of usefulness- mainly infinitely variable spindle speed- to most machines.

I have no three phase, and four-fifths of my machines use it- most on VFD, a couple on rotary.

As for the prices, those are absurd. I don't know where the auction was, but there's a ton of other places that, prior to, shall we say, recent economic issues, would have sold for three to five times those prices. Up here in Alaska, that Southbend would have gone for $3K, that Graziano for $6K.

Doc.

I agree with all your comments. Could be a very hefty price just in transportation. But, if you were in the area and had the available footprint, you could have a decent shop for not a lot of cash. This particular auction was just south of downtown Los Angeles.
Bridgeport, South Bend and Do-All for about $2k.......
Because of this board, I embraced the science of VFD's and left the SPOB in the dust!

OP mentioned fees, etc. in post #9. Also though, I’m curious if the T & C specified that removal had to be done by a rigger who was properly insured and bonded. I have also seen some of these where the machines are still hooked up and the seller requires disconnect be done by a licensed electrician. This can all make a cheap machine quite expensive.
