I picked this up today at a garage sale. It is a Rock Island #574. The grand total was $10. The swivel locking bolt is broken but besides that it is solid. I am going to do a complete restore on it. The swivel base is not connected. Can anybody explain to me how it attaches. It looks to me like all that connects the vise to the base is that one swivel lockimg bolt but I would think there would be more.

I would try to fix that broken piece by center punching whats left of the stud, drilling it out on the drill press until it was the right size for a stud, tap it it for the right size, locktite the right size stud in there and call it good

Hey, are you using a stubby can of Mt. Dew to trick our eyes into thinking the vise is larger than it is? :D

I was going to tap and drill it and then braze in a new stud. Tap it or Braze it which would be the best?

That's definately suckage! I thought I had gotten a good deal, but yours beats mine.

FWIW, mine has a 1" dia hole, so start looking for a 1" bolt, nut and washer.

I just picked up the exact same vise last weekend for $20. Here's a couple pictures with the screw in question. On my scale, it weighs 72 lbs.

Here is the piece now that I fixed it. I counter drilled the block and set in the 5/8 bolt and then brazed it in.

What kind of paint should I use and what color would have been stock.

The new "hammered" paint by rustoleum is great looking and I have heard it is very durable. When I finally get around to my vise rebuild that's what I will use.
