Was not a mechanis, but I did work swing shift.

I liked it, less management there, we could just work on what we had to do and any complications that required engineering or contacting outside companies got dumped back on dayshift

As a past 1600 - 2400 shift worker on aircraft for over 10 years I liked it better then day shift as there was not a bunch of supervisors around screwing up and bothering you while you try to work. The down side family issues, night time weather / temps I see your in CA so that may not matter to you. If your a civilian working nights / weekends generally you make more then your day shift counter parts. Another down side to nights it always appears day shift does nothing and nights does all lol , along with if you are at an organization that has functions during the day only well you miss out or you come in and are tired all night. I am sure many others will chime in with their thoughts so YMMV :}

I am an industrial/cnc mechanic and work 3:30pm to 11:30pm. Been doing it 14 years now and dread when my kids are older and have to go to days. (2&3 now). As people said before, less supervision, less dog and pony shows and more daylight to do things at home. We do the heavy maintence as there are few operators on our shift. Makes things fly by. If you like sports or parting you may not like it? 85% of the guys on ours shift want to be there and have 10+ years seniority and care. 3 shift they are there because they haven't made it to days yet
I hated 3 rs shift,always feeling like a zombie, almost all of them look like it coming in at shift change

I'm a former auto mechanic/shop owner, but I've been working 12hr. swing shifts for 29 years in an industrial setting. It was ok for the first 25 years, but it's wearing on me now and I'm just 2-3 years before I hang it up.

I spent many, many years on 2nd shift, mostly because I never had enough seniority to hold day shift. Like others have said, less supervision, more relaxed atmosphere, plenty of time to do stuff at home, and maybe best of all, plenty of sleep! When I was on days, I never had enough sleep-I'd get up at 4:30 am, and just wish so badly that I could go back to sleep-then I'd come home, and get doing something after work, and before I knew it, it was 11 pm, and I'd repeat the same cycle-not enough sleep, especially bad when I was working 7 days a week. If you get a weekend off, all you want to do is sleep. 2nd shift is best, if you don't have kids, or they are grown. I could never get used to Midnight shift, I just couldn't force myself to sleep long enough when I got home at 7:30 am, and neighborhood noises could be very distracting, plus phone ringing and doorbell ringing,etc.

Thanks for all the replies, and yes no kids only 20 years old and from everyone I've talked to and the replies on here it seems to be a pretty well liked shift

Full time I work for the railroad and shifts are based on seniority.. one shift I would work all 3 shifts in a week. One day morning 0630-1430 2 days afternoons 1430-2230 and 2 night shifts 2230-0630

Its rough...if you work a straight shift its not bad but if you are constantly changing it *****. Personally I like working different shifts as it helps with your personal life because most normal people work Monday through Friday daytime shifts so going to the mall and everything else is a lot easier during the day when most people are at work. Personally I refuse to do any sort of shopping on the weekends when the stores are packed

When I worked nights I hardly drank, when I went back to days I drank heavily, now I don't work I'm teetering on the edge of being a genuine alcoholic, maybe I should go back to working nights.

Working nights, like I'm doing right now ( it's a slow night) screws up my bowel movements, ( too much information?) luckily I only do 8 weeks of nights year

Done a swing shift for 34years. 12Hr-4 on 4 off. Switched every week
4 days, off 4
4 nights, off 4 never did get "use to it" just dealt with it. Paid the bills.
Retired now at 52.

Worked shift work for close to 40 years. I would never advise anyone to do it if there was any kind of a choice. It is hard on your social, physical and mental well being. Your body is constantly out of sync. It gets harder as you get older. Many of the guys in my department had health issues and half of the retirees died fairly early. My 2 cents.

I work 7 day swing Mid Aft Days. 7 on 2 off, 7 on 1 off, 7 on 4 off. The hardest one is getting to bed at a decent hour for day shift. I got use to it after a year or so. It stinks only having one weekend off a month. But it pays the bills which is good enough for me.
