Switch for a Powermatic 1150A Drill Press

Question for anybody that is knowledgeable in electrical things...

One day my old Powermatic on/off switch stop working and I though no big deal I can just order a new one, well much to my surprise they stopped making those switches.

Something about safety issues I guess ???

Is that the case for any of you electrical gurus out there ?

I had to order a well used switch from Ebay and you don't want to know the price I paid for a piece of plastic.

Thanks for any input in this matter.

Those Furnas switches come up at the OWWM forum from time to time, you could try there but will need to be registered to view the forum you need. Hubbell bought a lot of the Furnas product lines from Siemens you might look there or SQ D has some nice motor switches too.

It's a manual motor starter. Looks like it mounts like a standard device box judging by the screws on the cover.

Since you feel so strongly about this...I assume you have a suggestion about what switch that has a large stop plate would be appropriate.

I would be interested is knowing as I looked for one and there wasn’t any available that was American made that fit the press...

the Furnace switch from EBAY can be used as either a 1ph, 2ph or 3 ph connection

do you have a 3ph motor ?

if you have a 1ph motor, you can use a simpler switch

The reason I choose that particular switch...is that if something gets loose on the drill press and starts spinning...or I need to hold it for whatever reason...I can hit that off paddle with my head and stop the press. Ask me how I know...

use a foot pedal switch. for the drill press, I use a click-on, click-off style. For the bandsaw, it's a deadman style.

I’ve done this with my table saw. Need to do with DP since the switch is back by the motor.

I'd say that's pretty much industry standard pricing. It's not just pushbuttons but a manual motor starter. It handles the motor current.

Nema control gear isn't cheap but it should last as long as the original.

My Powermatic DP has a separate motor starter, so the buttons are nothing more than momentary contacts. They are not like the ones in the eBay ad, though, they are round and not like the other round ones that I see online. The starter looks like it was added later, though, so maybe the original control went bad and the owner converted to the buttons and starter that I have now.
