Pretty cool idea. If the magnet really does totally turn off, then you could wipe off any metal shavings that it picks up when charged.

I don't do much welding, but on smaller loose pieces, it can't be a PITA to get the bulky ground clamp in a good spot.

I use it to ground objects that my regular clamp can't grab e.g. enclosed rectangle tube frame.
It works ok on thick plate metal, but if I had a choice, I'd rather use my clamp.

That is what I use it for and like you, prefer the clamp.

I use a regular magnetic ground clamp - but now I have to find one like the OP wants too. Looks like it would work much better. I use a welding table for the small parts.

I have the magswitch type switchable. They're worth their money. Really great when there's nothing to clamp too, and have to weld a tab on to ground your work. On some things, it's a big no-no to have arc strikes / welds anywhere but the designated area. Other times it just looks bad.

I love mine so much I have a few! Also have their large rectangle switchable magnets that can lift ~500lb. They are very handy!
