Love the whole setup. The record collection is a really nice thing. I'm heading back to vinyl.

I wish you good luck selling the GB400. Its a great bike. I have the 89 GB500 which I've had since new. Great bike. Also had a 71 CB450 in red. Still thinking of getting another.

This is Foxie, my shed companion. Actually he is not allowed in the Shed. I used to let him in but he made the mistake of thinking he owned the place, and marked his territory. I have since asserted my alpha maleness and clarified what is mine and not his. :)

The monthly meetings are designed to try and learn skills, have fun, and try and help someone out. Our last meeting we had a car that belongs to a single mum that she said was "broken". She needed money, so we cleaned it out, serviced it, and stuck it on Ebay for her. So the idea is to try and use our love of all things mechanical to help out others.

The CB450 that we stripped down earlier got a coat of paint to the frame. Progress is slow!

I mentioned earlier that I would love to have some decent toolboxes. Picked up a couple on Ebay. Very happy with them.

Hi dr obson!
Not sure of the dimensions, but it is a standard double garage size shed. Nothing flash, but I love it!

Wow that first photo got me hooked :) I'm in Australia too, in Brisbane. Your shed/shop has such a good vibe to it, it obviously gets used and I love all the draws. I'm into photography too and like the black and white shots :)

Thanks for the comments guys. :)

I have not updated for a while, so perhaps I should!

The Honda CB450 project is continuing slowly, with me only getting to it with my friend once a month. The next time will be tomorrow, so I am looking forward to that!

Also, I am happy to say that the Honda GB400 was sold (I was not happy to see it go... but I was happy to get some money) so that I could purchase the next project in the growing line of projects!
boldor-1.jpg

It is a 1981 Honda CB900F2 Bol Dór with full fairing. It even has the original exhaust!
boldor-2.jpg

The tank was resprayed, so it is missing the transfers, but otherwise it is all original (except for a missing blinker).
boldor3.jpg

And there I was, thinking I would never own a bike with a clock! I am over 6'4", and so I did look a little silly on the GB400. I seem to be more comfortable on this! It has not run for a while, so I need to look at the brakes and the carbies. I have been told the motor is good, so we will see.

While I am at it, I might as well post some photos I took of another shed near mine. These guys don't appear to be a licensed business, but they restore old cars, in particular Ford Landaus. They were obliging and the camera loved the shed!

I just love their tool storage system. It made me feel a little better about mine! The last few times I have driven past they seem to be more into doing up old bikes. I should drop in and take some more photos one day soon.

Cool pics mate, i wonder if they spend more time looking for the write tool then actually what it takes to do the job with it. The cb looks pretty honest should be a good thing i think.

Last night I pulled the carbs of of the CB900 to give them a clean. For greater detail on the how to (if you are interested!) then you can go to my blog at www.ashedinryde.com. But if all you want is some fancy pics, here you go!

Hi Scotto,

Thanks for saying G'day! I went looking for your shed, but I note you have not put anything up yet. I look forward to seeing some pics!

The Shed is always (often) open for visitors!

Just read through your thread and certainly enjoyed all the pics. Really like the idea that you have a monthly bbq with friends to chat, eat, drink and work.

Do I spy a small vertical mill of some sort on the right side of the rear wall in the first pic? Can you shed (heh, heh) some light on it?

Hi John in Oh!

One day it might be a vertical mill, but not quite yet. I found it on the side of the road. It was an industrial dough mixer that someone threw out. When I saw it I thought it might make a neat little vertical mill. I have been collecting some bits for it (compound table etc) to get it going. The hardest thing will be machining the shaft so that I can put some sort of collet/chuck on it.

Whenever I try and move it I am amazed how I ever got it in the back of the Landcruiser the day I found it. It is amazing what you can do in the excitement of getting something for free!

John in Oh,

Here are some closer pics of the little mill.

It has a geared head with three speeds. I weights about 150kg, I reckon. It was manufactured not far from here in Sydney.

Well, I sure wouldn't have guessed that it was a dough mixer!!

I'm all in favor of re-purposing side-of-the-road freebees, but before you sink too much money or effort in the mixer to convert it into a small mill, take a close look at a mill-drill. About the same physical size as the mixer, but far more useful as a mill. Even new, a mill-drill is not overly expensive (obviously a relative comment!!) and can often be found as a used tool for really reasonable cost.

g1005z.jpg

Certainly not a Bridgeport, but they can do a lot of small milling jobs.

Save the dough mixer for whipping up a batch of cinnamon scones for eating as desert after a plate of bbq ribs!

I appreciate your perspective John. I have some experience of the drill mills from when I was teaching. The dough mixer is a lot more solid. Also, I have a motor for it (not in the photo), the table can be raised and lowered to any height and locked in place. I have a compound table that I got thrown in with an old lathe I bought. The only thing left to get it to be a mill is to have the spindle re-machined.

I spent some time looking at second hand mills, but found that small single phase mills go for $1200 or more. Large three phase mills that require a crane and truck to move go for as little as $200. As I don't have the room, the truck or the crane, the little dough mixer provides the opportunity for a free mill, after a small amount of work.

Finally, due to my Scottish heritage... free always wins! There is also a part of me that love to be able to say, "I made that", or "That cost me nothing". I do frustrate myself sometimes though, when I spend hours and hours to save myself $50!

Sounds as if the dough mixer/mill conversion is a lot more feasible than I expected! Make sure you take a lot of pics and post a thread whenever you get around to making the modifications ... should be very interesting.

I understand the Scottish heritage thing, got a lot of the Scot blood in my veins as well .... diluted by a healthy dose of Irish! But like they say, ya can't choose your family!

I bought one of these...
bullet-lift.jpg

It was the cheapest lift available that I could find. I figured it was easier than making one, but that I could beef it up if required. I am not convinced about the castors, for example. I pick it up tomorrow, and so I might have to do a little product review!
I don't like the yellow. :(

So, I picked up the new bike hoist last week.
bike-shed1.jpg

I was impressed with how solid it was. On the whole it was well constructed. The biggest issue with it is that the hydraulic jack does not lift the table high enough to lock it into position!
The castors are cast iron and it rolls easily. I will need to do some modifications, but on the whole I was very happy. I hate the yellow!
I have not has much time in the Shed lately, though I have done a bit of logo design!
Motorbike-logo-4-tone.jpg

This is not the completed one yet, but getting close. I have enjoyed seeing some people on GJ paint various logos on the walls of their garages. I thought I might give it a try. I was hoping for something that looked a bit old/classic.

I have another Shed Night coming up this Friday. Here are some pics from the last one. There was a single mum who needed a lawnmower in our community, so I had kept my eye out for one on the council cleanup. Found a nice 4-stroke Rover with OHV motor!

Frank-mower-oil.jpg

This Friday Night Shed Night will have the usual bbq and beer tasting. I am not sure what practical project we will undertake to try and make the world a better place this week, but I am sure something will come up!

I have a Shed Night coming up this Friday which I am looking forward to. We hope to do some work on the lawnmower powered go-kart. It has been a while since we got much done on it.

Update! I had a Shed tidy. This included putting my two rolling tool chests into a bench with a slab top.
bench-and-bike.jpg

It is rough (like most things in Ryde Shed) and is not painted. One day I might work out a colour scheme and start painting benches etc. Until then...

The pictures look great.

Do you process them in anyway before uploading them?

Yeah. I use an editing program that allows me to muck around with them a bit. The camera is an entry level Canon DSLR, and the program I use is Microsoft Office Picture Manager, so I guess it proves that anyone can be a photographer these days! :)

I have been looking at the tank and seat for the CB450. I started making the seat years ago when I was making a couple of others out of old tanks. I had welded in a piece of guard into the seat because I thought it would look cool. It happens to be VERY uncomfortable, so that has to come out.
