Got a coupon from a local shop offering a $18 oil change, cool I'd go for that.
Problem is they use their own "house oil" a synthetic blend. not to cool.

My Toyota Highlander has 115,000 miles using only conventional oil, almost exclusively changed by me.

Is there a problem with switching over to synthetic, or synthetic blend on a vehicle that is is good shape but never used synthetic?

I've never had any issues changing to full synthetic on high mileage engines. I have never used synthetic blends.

as long as the oil is api approved it's safe to run. Nothing else matters other than weight matters.

I would be more worried about their cheap oil filter with the paper end caps and poor anti-drain back valve.

I'm no expert, but have read about concerns with synthetic being able to seep through older gaskets easier than dino oil. Some people experience small leaks while others have no problems at all.

Not sure if you've seen this site, but this guy is the expert!!! Hope this helps in making your decision.

I swapped my 99 Ram 5.2l over to synthetic last fall after 340,000 km on dino. I used Castrol Syntec because it was on special. The main reason I swapped the truck over to synthetic was for cold starting…. I wasn’t able to plug in (block heater) at work this winter. So far, in 6,000 km I haven’t noticed any difference in leaking or consumption. The synthetic does look at little cleaner, but that could just be my imagination!

$18 oil change? With semi syn oil? Recycled oil and cheapest filter possible. Profit margins are razor thin on oil changes these days, the cost of oil is through the roof.

You want to look for a GF-5 rating, as long as it has that, you're good to go. "Synthetic blend" is a sham.

There are several advantages to switching to a quality, full synthetic oil. The only downside to synthetic, is that the initial cost is a little higher.

Personally, I'd stick with a good synthetic oil (Amsoil & Mobil 1 are my preferences) and a good quality filter.
