Awesome shop space, great attention to detail, thanks for sharing all the details as well.

Look forward to the project that this shop will produce.

Thanks Kriesel:thumbup: Lots of projects in the line waiting for the workshop to be ready:thumbup:

Nice house and very well organized workshop.

Thank you SorenJ:thumbup: It's coming along nice, only obstacles is the time and money and time:lol:

Update from the workshop.

I've been working on the welding jig project. The frame is almost finished. I had to brake it down and take a 30cm slice out of it.

My youngest son is helping me and learning how to weld:thumbup:

I mounted another work light on the tool area. I've noticed that I have a several projects going on at the same time. Well maybe just three:lol: I'm glad that I have now enough working surface. It's nice to switch between projects depending on the mood, and how my back feels:lol:

I bought a few more lure boxes and organized some nuts and bolts. Now I have all the stainless ones separated from the galvanized ones. I glued all the plastic "walls" with all plastics loctite super glue. There was no marking but I guess those boxes was a polyethene or something that normal superglue wont stick. So if I drop the box on the floor it hopefully don't mix up.

Looks good now and I can find stuff easy. It's been a warm winter here. +7 degrees on January is nice:thumbup: There's have been almost no snow until this week. I guess the winter is coming soon. Well I don't mind if there's no snow or cold weather. The electric bills have been great:thumbup:

Have a nice week everybody:beer:

I've been looking for a high shop chair for a while. I almost ordered one of these for a 200€

View media item 95135
I just don't like that back rest style. Or my back doesn't like those ones.

Yesterday I found one of these old barber chairs from the local graigslist. It was priced for 35€.

I went to pick it up and there was this old timer with really nice electronic shop. We talked about shop stuff almost two hours. He had bought this chair from an auction because no one else hadn't:lol:

20200206_014222%20%283%29-L.jpg

20200206_014239%20%282%29-L.jpg

It was pretty dirty and it has a really funky old barbershop smell on it. This is a German made Welonda chair from -60 or -70. Plastic armrests goes probably seventies..

I try to clean it but figured that it's easier to take it apart and clean it entirely..

20200206_014356%20%282%29-L.jpg

20200206_021351%20%283%29-L.jpg

I made a mix of hot water and citrus acid and the dirt came of easy. I wear a thick plastic gloves cos I imagined all those butts on this chair in past fifty years of time:lol:

I cleaned all the parts with citrus acid mix and massaged all plastic parts with black vinyl&plastic fixer..

20200206_180629%20%282%29-L.jpg

Seat and back rest came out clean. I let them dry over night and spread some leather conditioner next day. There's some beeswax in this stuff and now the smell is great:thumbup:

20200206_182958%20%282%29-L.jpg

20200206_182944%20%282%29-L.jpg

The upholstery is maybe vinyl and it has nice pearl look on it. Now it's easier to clean too after treatment.
Look's a bit like vintage car seat..

20200206_182718%20%282%29-L.jpg

There's a label in the bottom of the seat but all the markings have fade away.
It would be nice to now the year and specially how many kilowatts it has.. do I need to install five point seat belts on it:lol:

I bought some wheels so I can roll around the shop.. The chair is heavy because of the pump.

20200206_200505%20%282%29-L.jpg

20200206_203625%20%282%29-L.jpg

I wanted to keep it original or so that the wheels can be removed. I marked the places, drilled and tapped a 8mm hole and tack welded some all thread on the threaded hole. The all thread goes all the way on the leg so it's solid for some tight corners:lol:

Then it was assembly time. I tested the pump mechanism and it worked great. Lifting the lever locks the spinning of the chair. Pumping lifts the seat and when pressed all the way down seat goes down.
So I didn't change the oil for the pump. Someday I will do it cos I've never changed oil on the chair before:lol:

20200206_203653%20%283%29-L.jpg

This rubber cover was interesting to but back together, clever locking system.

20200207_044323%20%283%29-L.jpg

And boy it's comfortable to sit. I feel like Captain Kirk in this chair:lol: I'm going to sit now for a while:thumbup:

Thanks Bret:thumbup: That citrus acid is good stuff for something like this.

Spotted another cool item from local craigslist. I think I have a radar for old stuff in my brain:lol:

This is a Samson Quick-set camera dolly made by Quick-set Inc. Northbrook, Illinois, USA

It was listed for 20€ and the guy brought it to me:thumbup:

I think it's from seventies.. I can't find any information from the company. Lot of tripods and dollys for sale and they are listed as vintage? There's one patent number in the head and it goes to early sixties.

It was slightly tacky to use so I took it apart.

All parts washed and cleaned. There was some old hard grease on the sliding parts. Also couple of teflon seal rings that I replaced.

I but it back together with fresh grease and ptfe-lubricant. Now it moves like a dream. I just love how well these old things are made:thumbup:

It's a bit heavy duty for my Gopro camera:lol: But I like it better than tripods. One of the tripod legs is always on the way when filming and working. I was planning a small boom on this dolly for camera or work/filming light. Future project maybe:thumbup:

If someone have info about the company I'll be happy to hear it:beer:

Have a great Sunday and upcoming week:beer:

Tapio, it looks like Moog is the parent company. They have three lines of tripods, Gibraltar, Hercules and Samson.

https://www.moogs3.com/products/tripods.html

Quickset International Inc. has the same address and phone number as Moog and they have a Samson line of tripods so it's a little confusing.

http://a2dcorp.us/pdf/quickset/samson.pdf

I don't know exactly what you have earned but a "YOU ****" seems like an understatement. If you're dissatisfied with your purchase, re-list it for the same price as this one -- yours has a much more elaborate head unit....

Thanks Bob:thumbup: Ok I was looking for a Samson quick-set company but Samson is just a model name. I have to check your links tomorrow. Now I'm too tired.

Holy smokes:wtf: Is that prize real.. I bet it includes a camera and a camera-man:lol:

I guess I did good then, and **** too:lol: I found some similar tripod over 100$ but that is way better. I have to show that to my wife so she let me buy more cheap old stuff:thumbup:

Organizing update

I went to local hardware store to buy some carpet. I found these small bins and they were on 50% sale.
I thought I don't need more bins, but boy those were cheap and there's four different size. So I spend 24€ and bought 231 bins:lol:

20200227_155214%20%283%29-L.jpg

Hardest part was to remove all the tape around them..

I measured them and fitted in my storage drawers but no luck with the fitment. There's a 5mm problem.

20200228_132213%20%282%29-L.jpg

Then I figured, if I lift the bottom of the drawer up 30mm they fit perfect. I had some left over 30mm insulation foam. I cut some pieces inside the drawer.

And now they fit perfect:thumbup: Now I can fit more stuff in the drawers.

He is the face of the Nashville Predators club. A class act who is adored in this city. A humble man who is kind to everyone.

Yes he truly is a great guy. You know Mikael Granlund? He's also around my neighborhood.

We have a great team of Finish elite league in my town, called the Kärpät. It's a small predator animal. I think it's called a stoat or ermine, I'm not sure.

Lot's of great NHL players have grown in that team. Sebastian Aho, Jesse Puljujärvi, Joonas Donskoi, Saku Mäenalanen and so on..

Icehockey is fun to watch. Waiting for the World Championship games to start:thumbup: We did ok last year:thumbup:

Welding table update

I've been showing my welding table project across the thread. Now it's mostly finished so I'm going to tell the whole story.

So few years ago we ordered laser cut plates 10x800x1200mm with 16mm 50x50 hole pattern. I would prefer a 1x1 meter pieces because my old welding table was 1x2meter. It was a croup order so this was the selected size for shipping purposes.

Now it's time to finally make the plates fit to my table, or fit the table to the plates.

First I countersink 1380 holes with step drill. The 16mm step guided nicely the drill straight and the 18mm step did the countersink. I sharpened the drill few times:lol:
Then I welded the two plates together. I was measuring and checking several times that the holes would line up correctly.

20190820_203159%20%283%29-L.jpg

There was some warp on the plates, so I made some support ribs under the table. I had old post legs with 10x100x800 steel plates laying around so I reused those for the web.

I made a slot style connections for the web. I don't have my milling machines running yet so I made the slots with drill press and band saw. After some filing those came out nice.

user380465_pic101656_1584346965%20%282%29-L.jpg

I removed the mill scale and then it was time to weld the ribs on place. I went slowly forward with short weld beads.

20200105_155342%20%283%29-L.jpg

The rib came out straight and rigid. I had a tool change system in my old welding table. I have some tooling mounted to 45x45mm tubes that goes inside to 50x50 tube. I made receiver slots for the tools on four courners of the table. Drilled and tapped two 8mm holes per slot for tightening screws.

20200108_185915%20%283%29-L.jpg

Then it was time to remove the jig part off the table. Damn it's heavy to lift, I used my motorcycle lift to save my back.
I sliced 8inches off from the table and remounted the legs. I also shortened the legs as low as I can. I have a toolbox that goes inside the table frame, so it defines the high of the frame.

20200119_152312%20%283%29-L.jpg

I made mounts for the casters and the adjustable feet. I decided to mount casters with locking mechanism and some machine feet so I can level the table if needed.

My 9 year old doing some practice welding, He did pretty good beads:thumbup:

20200120_204157%20%283%29-L.jpg

Here I'm making mounts for the toolbox and a shelf for tools, Also remounted the swivel stool hinge.

Then it was time for paint. I went with dark gray on the frame. It's the same "container" paint that I have used before. It's easy to paint and I like the flat finish.

I painted the machine feet flat black and mounted some allthread with strong locktite so they stay inside the feet.

20200215_083247%20%283%29-L.jpg

I turned the jig part around and finally checked the straightness. It was pretty good. There was about 3mm bow in the table. I welded it on the frame from the middle and lift the ends with washers and now it's straight. From end to end it's in 1mm tolerance. Table size is about 3ftx8ft.

20200217_110838%20%283%29-L.jpg

Then it was time for some additional equipment. I made some metal channels on the ends for electrical sockets. Also mounted some 1mm sheet metal for the shelf.

20200219_124443%20%283%29-L.jpg

20200220_153149%20%283%29-L.jpg

I did some patching on the toolbox for cleaner look, Those are the handlebar holes in both ends I welded shut.

20200225_151729%20%283%29-L.jpg

After some bodywork I painted rest of the parts red for some contrast.

20200229_191258%20%283%29-L.jpg

Pulled some wire and made a couple ground points for the electric system. There's a cord in the end of the table so I can plug it in and have easy access for sockets. Not so much cords laying around the floor.

I was looking my attachment tools and they look'd sad on the new shiny table. So I decided to make them look better too.

My tool change system includes a vise, sheet metal cutter, shrinker and stretcher, small anvil, small bench grinder and a band saw for wood. And it's a growing collection:lol:

This is an old Woden W32 vise. I love these old English vises but the casting is pretty ruff. I smoothed it a bit with a flap disk.

20200311_121354%20%282%29-L.jpg

Looks a lot better with fresh paint. I cleaned all the parts, Sharpened the blades and assembled with fresh lubricant.

20200312_154605%20%283%29-L.jpg

The jaws from the Woden vise was pretty beat up so I made new ones from hard aluminum.

20200312_153537%20%283%29-L.jpg

20200314_123046%20%283%29-L.jpg

Also made a adjustable bracket for the tools on the shelf so they stay put in corners. And here is the finished table.

20200315_201848%20%282%29-L.jpg

20200316_094905%20%283%29-L.jpg

I still have to make a lot of tooling for the clamping system. There's a lot of them for 16mm hole but they are pretty expensive. I'm going to make those when I get my machines going again.
I also have to make a adapter for my metal cutter handle. It has to be removable so it fits on the shelf. I have some other plans for the table but not sure yet how to do it.

Jig table movie

Have a great week and stay in the workshop. I think it's the safest place to be in for couple of weeks:beer:

I truly admire how you create and restore stuff!

I'm (slowly) restoring my first vise. Do you treat the exposed metal that's not painted in color with any product, or do you just leave it as is?

Very impressive welding table! You went all the way with the leveling and adding vertical members.

Thanks Wasfast:thumbup: Well there was a small bow on both plates. I think it's the stress from the laser cutting. Now they are pretty straight:thumbup:

I truly admire how you create and restore stuff!

I'm (slowly) restoring my first vise. Do you treat the exposed metal that's not painted in color with any product, or do you just leave it as is?

Thank You Ronin22:thumbup: What kind of vice you have, There's some pretty cool Reed and Wilton vises on that side of the world. Here it's pretty much English or German made stuff. I have two Woden/Record/Irwin vices. It's the same company, different era.

For exposed metal, If not chromed or zinc coated I usually polish the surfaces. Polishing wax keeps the rust away some time. Some thin oil is nice for cast iron surfaces. My stuff is pretty much in a dry conditions so no rusting issues on tools.

Welding table turned out awesome, as did everything else. Serious inspiration for me to get back in the garage

Thanks ZJohnson1:thumbup: That is the great thing on this site, so much inspiration:thumbup: I'm glad if my stuff makes an impact. Thanks for stopping by.

"Fab-ulous" work on the weld table.
Very nice!

Thank You Boosted1 and thanks for stopping by:thumbup:

I have a lot of pictures about the project but my photo album is almost full. I think I have to start looking for a good photo sharing site.

Here is couple pics more.

This is amazing little bench grinder. It's a Kef-motor from Denmark and it's completely silent. I have left it rolling few times by accident, I think it needs a indicator light when it's on:lol_hitti I use it mostly for sharpening tungsten and small stuff.

Looks like I have to be a teacher now for four weeks as Finland is closed. I have three kids and I wonder what to teach.. Math, Physics and stuff.. OR welding, grinding and painting:lol:

Stay safe my friends:beer:

If you teach them welding, grinding, and painting can I be in the class? I love that welding table. As usual you have produced some more high quality stuff.

Thanx for the answer!
It's a cheap and common "Barbero" from Argentina. But it's the only I've got :) Thanx again for the advice and keep on going forward! You thread is one of the most enjoyable around here!

Couple weeks back I took my wife to the dentist, There is a recycling center near by so I went there to spend my waiting time. Nothing special there but I looked this thing for a while. We went back home and I Googled about it and found nothing.. absolutely nothing.

So I thought it's pretty rare and went back and bought it for 25€. They said that I was the first one interested about it:lol:

It's some kind of map drawing light table?

There's the maker, address and even a telephone number on it. Haven't try to call it but that London areal code was operating 1959-1990.

I wound some information about H.Singer. I'm not sure but I think this is one of the side products from the great Singer Corporation Best known for its sewing machines.

I'm not sure if I need this but I'm going to make it my new planning table. I enjoy drawing plans by hand (maybe cos can't use cad) So I think it fits nicely in my command center.

There's some damage on the legs and some rust but nothing difficult to handle. Well the color is wrong:lol:

I investigated the insides and there's quite an arsenal of lightning. Four 75 watts fluorescent tubes and one 13 watt. Is it a heater too:lol_hitti

And then there's a AMF minute timer for the lights. If it's the American machine and foundry company did they have production line in Great Britain? It says made in Britain on the back side. And why there's a timer for lights. All but one starter is taken off from the lights. I guess they heat up pretty fast. All the lights are made by Thorn lightning company in Britain.

So a lot of questions. What is it, how it works, How old is it about, Is it rare and am I destroying it if I paint it.. If someone has some knowledge I would be happy to know about it.

At least we have had some fun Military operation planning moments with my youngest son on it:lol:

I missed the welding table build. That thing looks like a piece of art. I also googled your vise and grinder.

Can’t help you with that other table though, but it’s very interesting. Can’t wait to see what you do with it!

Thank You Unruh:thumbup:

I like how the welding table came out too. I have to do a bunch of holding and clamping tools when I get my mill and lathe setup going. Next year maybe:lol:

That vise is pretty interesting. There was a faded stickers on it, one said Woden and one said "Lifetime guarantee unbreakable vise"

I managed to do some Woden stickers and they are pretty close to original but the "guarantee" sticker was so faded and I haven't found that label from the internet.

The company began as The Steel Nut & Joseph Hampton Ltd. and was acquired by Record Tools in 1961. I have a old tool catalog from 1975 and there's still Woden tools available. I guess it's new old stock.

There's a neat picture in the catalog about the showroom from 1975. I have to make a time machine and travel to shop some nos-tools:lol:

I have done some investigating about the light table and I think I know what it is. There's over 300 watts light power and a timer for max 5 minutes. So I think it's a diazo printing device.
It works something like this. There's a master drawing that is placed on the table. Then there's a light sensitive diazo paper that is placed on the top of the master. Then it's exposed to the light source and the master transfers with the 1:5 grid to the diazo paper.
So it's like a copying machine for big prints. First there was blueprints, then whiteprints (blue lines with white background) and then there was xerox machines. I'm not sure but something like that.

Would be cool to test it and make some real "blueprints" for some project:thumbup: I think it involves some pretty toxic chemicals thou.

I'm in middle of investigation and could be totally wrong also:lol:

Thanks for stopping by and stay safe:beer:

Drawing board update

Best place to stay in quarantine is obviously the workshop.. Well at least it's good for the nerves these times. I took the light table apart, cleaned and sanded it with 180grit. There was some surface rust and couple dents. Worst part was the leg supports that I managed to bend back to shape.

I did the whole thing without visiting the hardware or paint store. I was dreaming about light gray color but only paint I had enough was flat red. So I paint it red and I'm pretty happy how it turned out. My command center area is pretty white so little color is good thing.

20200315_142157%20%282%29-L.jpg

I wanted to make the table mobile so I welded some 10mm studs on the legs. I had six legs but only four wheels so I have to update it later with two wheels.

20200321_173637%20%283%29-L.jpg

No pics about the sanding, bodywork or painting process. I don't care so much about those jobs so when I go to that mode I forget my phone and just do it fast as possible.

I painted the inside white an cleaned all the hardware. I rewired the whole thing with fresh stuff and added some ground wires. Also switched the old igniters for electronic ones. I was thinking about led tubes but 1800mm led tubes are hard to find here. Maybe in future. I think I don't need the lights anything more than tracing sometimes. I added a strip of seal on the edges so the dust wont get in so easy.

20200327_142317%20%283%29-L.jpg

Polished some hardware and put it back together. I added some screws on the structure so it's solid. I tested all the tubes and when it's all turned on it's pretty bright. It was on for ten minutes and I'm pretty sure I tanned a bit:lol:

Here it's ready for action. I added a track of lights for the table. I saved these lights from a store renovation. I can't believe what people throw in the trash bin. Perfectly good lights and expensive brand.

There were no shelves in the cabinet so I made two from a pine board I had laying around.
It's good size cabinet for storing some plans and other important artifacts.

I think this is a nice addition to the workshop. And some work surface is always great. I can do some clean assembly work here too.
