T,

You better make sure those earrings are gold plated next time.....she might not be so agreeable if they don't involve some precious metal...:D
Well I'm glad she ain't in to bling😅 and when I said these are pure organic plastic made from corn starch.. even better(y)

Garden work

Last summer my wife tested something called Cobaea scandens vines and those turned out great. She was told that it's too cold in this growth zone but good test is always better then theory. I guess our closed yard is warm enough for exotic flowers.

Only problem was we didn't have any vine supports, trellises, grids, mesh.. (what are those:LOL:)

IMG-20210607-WA0000-XL.jpg

It grew about 4.5 meter in two months and my wife desperately tried to tie it up with ropes and nails. Didn't manage to find any pictures when it was blooming but the flowers was very nice indeed.

It made our dart matches a bit challenging too:LOL:

So this year I had to make some trellises. I'm fortunate I had some pressure treated lumber in stock. With these lumber prices I would have used the same rope and nail technique as last year😅

Like all the good projects starts so did this one, Buying tools. I bought a fresh blade in to my table saw for ripping and boy, went like piss in the snow. (Finnish saying)

IMG_1517-XL.jpg
IMG_1519-XL.jpgIMG_1523-XL.jpg

I covered my work area with a tarp so the cleaning was easy after the work was done. I cut some 28x28mm strips and made some grooves for both parts. I looked for a 28mm router bit with no luck and ended up doing the grooves with the miter saw and chisel. The weather was nice so I took the long path.

IMG_1521-XL.jpg
IMG_1522-XL.jpg

20210604_153115-XL.jpg

I assembled the grids with polymer glue and pin nails. I was careful with the grooves and let them dry overnight. came out pretty solid.
I was careful with the glue also because all I had was black😅

IMG_1537-XL.jpg

IMG_1539-XL.jpg
IMG_1541-XL.jpg IMG_1543-XL.jpg

I added a support piece for both side with glue and screws to give some strength. The vines can be surprisingly heavy. There's now more plants where the trellises goes higher (3.5meter) and less in this spot where there's no room to go higher. If the vines grow like last year I have to do a vertical extension:LOL:

I made these flush planter pots from 65liter construction plaster buckets. Drilled water holes about three inches from the bottom. Cheap and durable and stays moisture few days. There's plenty of room under the deck and the pot just hangs there from the edge.
We've had some summer season flowers in these and some evergreens in wintertime.
I just hope the pollen time is over so I can wash the deck finally.
IMG_1542-XL.jpg

IMG_1544-XL.jpg
Nelli is supervising from the inside this time, She doesn't like the Milwaukee impact ratcheting sound at all😅

Well that's it, nice small project. My wife said that the trellises came out too nice and the plants wont grow this year. I guess that's a compliment.. or is it:LOL:

Thanks for tuning in guys!

Nice job on the trellises! Those look great.
Thanks PugetDude!
Nice work "T" and as always very well documented

Thanks

Don
Thanks Don!
Nice work T. May all your future projects go like "Piss in the snow"....:ROFLMAO:
Thanks Mark! I sure hope so!
The trellises came out great and are integrated really nicely with the house!
Thanks Nick! I think so too, I have this Japanese style garden on my plans. There's one Mongolian maple tree we have been growing five years now, storm took couple branches out of it but it's doing better now. Stones, moss, small evergreen trees and a sea of small gravel is how I see it coming. I think the trellises I made suits in pretty good. We don't have any lawn on the inner yard so it needs green desperately 😅

Small memory support project

I'm not sure am I coming old or what but my memory is doing tricks on me. Or maybe I got too much things going on at the same time in my mind, and in the workshop.
Do you guys have any difficulties operating something you haven't used for a while or is it just me?
I have to check and double-check and sometimes triple-check things I'm doing:LOL:

One night I was watching sci-fi movie called Stowaway (nice movie btw) and they had an operating manual just about everything in the spaceship. I thought that's a cool idea for the workshop too.

For example my lathe has been off from the work a long time now and I'm pretty sure I have to learn how to do threads and stuff all over again when it's done. Another thing is tig-welding, which cup, which electrode to use etc.

I was thinking small dedicated clipboards for every machine. Where you can collect information, charts, tips and experience about the machine or procedure, including a service dates for oil changes and stuff.

I know there's cheap clipboards in stores but I didn't find anything that looked durable, and where's the fun of buying ready made:LOL:. So I decided to do my own clipboards. I bought these clips from a local "dollar store" twelve for four €. Then I bought these cheap plastic cutting boards, three for five €.
i-Bdv6Hrn-XL.jpg

i-xpFbD5q-XL.jpg

i-sM93rVN-XL.jpg

i-mKdX46S-XL.jpg

I made a 4mm thread for the clip and it's done:LOL: I broke my 4mm thread drill other day and had to use my hand tap in the drill. Goes nice in plastic. I found a Narex tap from my collection, didn't know they make taps and dies too.

i-2QtXsrM-XL.jpg

i-pZN74LZ-XL.jpg

i-j4LRRvK-XL.jpg

I dedicated this one for the printer, small hook and there it is hanging above the printer. Now I have to test do I remember to write important stuff down on it:LOL:

Well there's my workshop/spaceship proceed manual clipboard, only 2€ a piece. I can think a lot of machines that need this thing, lathe, mill, drill-press etc, maybe one for the computer for two million passwords and stuff I keep forgetting..

You can see another mind blowing workshop update on the background of the upper pick, a side view mirror:LOL::LOL:

When I'm doing computer work and listening music my back towards the door way my kids (and wife) likes to sneak in behind my back and scare the **** out of me:p I've been so close to heart attack many times.. Now I check my rear view mirror above the screen and can be all cool when they try to do it(y) They haven't notice the mirror yet.

I've been playing with the 3D-printer and it sure is fun toy to mess around. I ordered this small roll of coconut Formfutura Easywood filament, 40% wood 60% PLA. It smells and feels like wood and it's very light. I printed a small baby Groot planter for my daughter.

i-VsXfdKv-XL.jpg

i-NPbn9R5-XL.jpg
She painted it and plant the (fake) flowers. I'm not sure if it holds water😅

I also made a new spool holder from PETG. Small lifting from the bed here but it still works fine. This is a model with bearings so no roll jams this far.

I've been planning a enclosure for the printer with filament sensor and all the bells and whistles. With a heated enclosure printing PETG should be effortless I've heard.
i-R2CTQq8-XL.jpg

i-3cp7vtS-XL.jpg
Mrs. T-handle has been using the printer too, all kinds of hair accessories and earrings has been manufactured. I'm slowly talking she in to laser engraving too;)

When supervising the printer I've been slowly building a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor . This is the coolest set I've ever seen, all kinds of details and functions and really nice building solutions too, I love it already. It sure is a nice thing to take back your lost childhood:LOL:

i-x496xv6-XL.jpg

i-VFZsp57-XL.jpg

And last but not least a nice sunset from our favorite lake. We have had a really nice weather and water is warm enough even for me. This lake has a beautiful sand beach and it's only about five km from our home. Great place to hang out and chill.

i-ML3vRGX-XL.jpg

It sure is a long post again but Thanks for tuning in and reading! Have a great weekend everyone!

Sounds awesome! I've always liked Japanese gardens, seems like it will fit in with your house, well.

Wow you've really jumped in head first with the 3d printer. The baby groot is very impressive.

I think that's a great idea with the clipboards. I often have a similar problem because it's just a hobby, I'm not constantly in the shop repeating the same maneuvers. It's easy to forget.

I lol'd at the mirror. Good stuff 👍

Thanks Jay! Yes I've been doing some easy stuff because my back isn't go-operating  It's nice to do some light work for a while. I will continue my machine restorations when my back is better.

Yes there's something Scandinavian about Japanese style gardens, simple and robust but takes a lot of time to do right, I like it a lot.
The 3d-printer has been running a lot. I've been printing ready models from thingiverse, there's a ton to choose from. I like the feeling that I'm working when I print something even if I'm feeling lazy:LOL:

I have a feeling that those clipboards can save a lot of time and "Googling" if I keep them updated. Good "journal" to give away with the machine when sold too.

I've been tinkering some bonsai trees from aluminum/copper wire when I'm not feeling like to go in the workshop or my back hurts. It's a nice hobby and these trees lasts more then one season:LOL:

This is my fourth and I think this is the best looking this far. It's a cheap hobby too, all you need is round nose pliers and some wire.

I 3d-printed the pot, My wife had some decorative stones so I filled the roots with that. Mixed some wood glue and water, rinsed the stones with a small syringe so the gravel stays put. Easier to clean with a vacuum cleaner when dusty.

T, love your Bonsai. Very nice workmanship!
Thanks Mark!
That is really cool and my kind of plant, one that I can’t kill! Good job on that and very creative.

Jay
Thanks Jay! Yes these are very easy plants, shower when dusty is all it needs:LOL:
Wow!...nice Bonsai!! (y):rocker::bow:...how many feet....sorry....er...meters of wire do you think are in that one?
Thanks! There's a 100meters(330ft) of 1mm(19gauge) coated aluminum wire. Lot of twisting to do..

These are my trusty bonsai pliers. Bahco Sweden made in W-Germany provided by Finnish military surplus store:LOL:

I got my dumpster find quad back together finally. Shopmanager did the test driving and drove out the problems. I had to adjust timing three times to get it running properly. Timing marks has a wide tolerance on these motors

Shopmanager has a "skate or die" phase going so I placed this one on to craigslist and he has a quad and a scooter already. I had about twenty calls and messages and sold it on the same day. I guess my asking price was right.

We have been building all kinds of ramps and boxes for skating. Plywood price is sky high so we've been dumpster diving the pieces we need:LOL:

Have a great weekend!

That turned out awesome. Great job. If your prices for OSB are similar to ours, you may need to find and build a few more quads to afford a sheet.
Thanks Zmotorsports! The lumber prices are still sky high but coming down a bit 😅
I think you left out 1 small requirement to build one of those bonsai trees emagination and maybe talent too.
Nice work "T"
Thanks Don! Yes a bit of imagination too(y)

Our summer has been great and hot. Not much shop time for me. We have been mostly swimming and camping with kids. My wife has a four week summer vacation too so we've been enjoying the summer.

The shop has been way too hot to do anything. I'm glad I have an air conditioning inside the house. It's a clever system connected to the geothermal heating. The glycol circulates inside the dirt where's cold and it goes thru the inner unit and cools down the house. It's very cheap to use. The inside unit takes about 40watts/hour with the pump. It's nice 21C inside the house when outside is pushing almost 30C.

Inside the workshop has been 25C to 28C all summer. I did some extra air intakes for the workshop so that the air would circulate better at nights.

Mosquito free air from here. I insert a knob so I can turn these close for winter. When I'm using the welding fumes extractor I can turn it open for fresh air.

We did a small camping trip to the "Hawaii" of Finland. It's an island near to my hometown called Hailuoto (shark islet). Half hour ferry ride takes you there and it's a totally different looking place with sand dunes and super nice beach.
There was some kind of a music festival at the time and all the hotels and cabins were full. We took our own small summer cabin with us, a 5 person teepee:LOL:

There's a nice 150 year old lighthouse on the beach. On the middle is our camp. You can literally camp where ever you want in Finland and it's totally legal(y) For a campfire you have to ask a permission from the land owner.

Shopmanager was going to swim to the Sweden but gave up:LOL:

Sorry for the lag of updates and have a great weekend!

The cutest frying pan in the world. We did some pancakes for dessert and breakfast:love:
Tapio, that looks like the pancakes my Swedish grandmother made (and taught me to make). Swedish and it looks like Finnish pancakes are thin and light and rolled with jam inside just like a French Crepe. I rarely eat American pancakes (flapjacks) because they are thick, heavy and soak up syrup like a sponge. For every American pancake I can eat three Swedish. I still have the frying pan my grandmother used but too many campfires turned the flat bottom wavy -- fine for a gas stove but terrible for a glass-top electric range. I use the non-stick crepe pan these days.
Crepe Pans.jpg
Your vacation spot reminds me of the Fire Island National Seashore where we camped years ago. We got to the campground using our boat and set up a tent on shore. Many nights we moved the boat offshore to be able to sleep without hoards of mosquitos. Fire Island is part of the barrier island separating the Great South Bay on Long Island (New York) and the North Atlantic. It even has a lighthouse (and a sunken forest).

Exactly Bob! Crepes😅 I was looking for a word for those but only thing I could think was pancakes or flapjacks. We do make thin crepes here and roll them with whipped cream/ice cream and strawberry jam. It's delicious and goes straight in to sides of your body:LOL:

Here's my recipe if someone wants to try them.

-6dl milk
-2 eggs
-2 to 3dl white flour
-half dl sugar
-half tea spoon of salt

Mix it all together well and let it sit for 30 minutes. You can adjust the mix with milk or flour. It should be like house paint:LOL: Not too thick or too runny.
Warm up the frying pan, About one tea spoon of butter per crepe is good for those buttery crispy edges. Fry both sides golden brown and enjoy(y) Non stick pan is good if you want to test your turning skills :ROFLMAO:

I've heard about using a sparkling water instead of milk but haven't test it yet.

Pancakes. That's a totally different story, we make those in oven:oops: I have to share that recipe someday.

That's one cool spot to go camping. I wish I had a boat too, it's nice when you don't have to carry your beer cases.. I mean camping equipment too far. I know a lot of nice sand beaches here where you can only go by hiking or with a boat. That would be so cool. Maybe some day I will build or buy a boat. There's a huge lake near here and the sea is only few kilometres away from my home.

Thanks for stopping by Bob!

Tapio, that's my grandmother's recipe! She taught me to swirl the pan so the crepe was thin.
Nice Bob! Yes the swirl is important, the thinner they are the better they are (y)

Shop updates

I've been doing some shop organizing despite the heat, mostly at night. I wasn't satisfy to my screwdriver/pliers storage so I did some changes. I also bought new Bahco ergo screwdrivers from sale so I had to make some room.

Here's the before situation.

i-g9PTsRH-XL.jpg

i-Ngkgrj2-XL.jpg

i-mnNgDFh-XL.jpg

I moved my file collection and wire brushes to the welding area. They are mostly used there anyway. I 3d printed three screwdriver holders. Those are designed to fit on to my pegboard. (Thingiverse link-> Biltema screwdriver holder )

i-2qwNkPB-XL.jpg

i-FKdgQTb-XL.jpg

i-JtsF6xN-XL.jpg
Haven't use these guys before. I have to say that they fit in to my hand perfectly, grip is also nice and I like the markings on the end of the handle. These sets were on sale so I have some double torx heads now for both hands:LOL:

IMG_1617-XL.jpg

IMG_1618-XL.jpg
New vs old. About 50 years of evolution right there:LOL:

IMG_1616-XL.jpg

I also have an old green stubby bahco, I'm not sure where I bought these but this one must be lucifers old screwdriver:LOL: I bought an ergo driver for bits also. I have been 3d printing some bit holders for the pegboard but haven't find a nice model yet. Others are too tight and some are too loose. If someone has a good model for multiple bits on the row holder, sent me a link(y)

20210802_162900-XL.jpg

20210802_162910-XL.jpg

Well I think it's better now, I mounted the t-handle holders also to the pegboard to get some table space. The lapping plate is going to the machining area when it's ready.

Now I have all the screwdrivers in the same place. How many screwdrivers do you really need? all of them:LOL:

I also printed some Dremel tool holders. These came out nice. I have to make one more to fit all the heads I've collected over the years.

20210802_162944-XL.jpg

20210802_163010-XL.jpg

Here's a link for these-> Dremel bit holder

I dived some Ikea lack shelves from the dumpster, The shelf parts were gone but I saved the mounting parts. Perfect holders for my track saw guides. I mounted those between the rafters so they are safe there and out of the way.

20210802_162613-XL.jpg

20210802_162625-XL.jpg

20210802_162700-XL.jpg

I mounted an oversize plastic pipe blanks on the tubes so the guides stay up there. I'm utilizing the roof also for storing tools and materials:LOL:

One more update is the new guardian of the workshop. Simo the hedgehog. It's been eating supper on my workshop doorstep for three weeks now. Cool little fellow. He likes dog food and water, I swell the dog food on water so that Simo does't blow up:LOL:

20210725_231853-XL.jpg

That's all for now. Have a great week guys!

Wow, looks like an awesome camping trip @T-handle ! The "Hawaii" of Finland sure is beautiful. Like @Bob Heine I am going to jump on the Swedish pancakes train. I'm American but of Swedish heritage and my grandmas and mom used to make them often. Basically like a crepe as mentioned, so delicious! We'd often have with maple syrup, but also butter/sugar, or Lingonberry jam. Mmmmm, now I'm hungry!!

Now I have all the screwdrivers in the same place. How many screwdrivers do you really need? all of them:LOL:

Lol!

Organization looks killer. Nice job with the 3D prints, everything looks so tidy and functional.

Tapio, every time you improve the organization in your shop I am motivated to do something with mine. Your Dremel tool collection seems to be missing my favorite item, the diamond cutting disk. I found some at Harbor Freight years ago and they are my go-to device for narrow kerf metal slices.
Diamond Cutting Discs.jpg
I started off with these little ones and when I needed to sharpen tungstens for my TIG welder I got a much bigger disk and marked it with a 'T' so I wouldn't use it for anything else. My eyeball angle gauge is defective so I made a dedicated tungsten sharpener from a cheap Dremel clone and an eBay attachment with a third size diamond disk.

Thanks for the tip Bob (y) I have to get those diamond disks. I think I go with the alternative brand too. Original Dremel 50mm disk costs 20€ a piece😅

Nice tungsten sharpening device(y) My go to is a belt sander and eyeball. Good respirator too, tungstens with thorium can be pure poison for your lungs. I think I have to dedicate one belt for tungsten sharpening only.

Do you have a 3d printer? I see it handy now for doing different storage solutions(y)

I just love looking at your work space and can only wish mine were 1/2 that clean and organized. Great looking tool board with the printed holders. How nice. So do you have a name for tubby? (hedgehog)

Tapio, the Dremel premium often sends me on searches for Bob's-Bank-Friendly options and if Harbor Freight doesn't cut it, eBay sellers may.

I have adopted the Lanthanated tungstens for exactly that reason although I still use a 3M respirator.

I don't have a 3d printer because one more toy could lead to my demise. Although Liane did tell me to buy an expensive (~$100) kitchen knife for Christmas today and then said no, buy it today (I gifted one to my son-in-law last Xmas).

I just love looking at your work space and can only wish mine were 1/2 that clean and organized. Great looking tool board with the printed holders. How nice. So do you have a name for tubby? (hedgehog)
Thanks Don! It can be a mess when I'm in a middle of project. I am forcing myself to clean after the project is done, organizing tools so that everything has a place helps a lot. Sometimes when I'm out of inspiration I just start cleaning, clean workshop and a cup of tea clears my mind and I'm all over a project again. Sometimes my biggest project is to keep the workshop tidy and clean:LOL:

The weather is going in cooler direction and I can see myself working on the machining area again.

Hedgehog in Finnish language is "siili" So shopmanager came up with Simo siili. Simo is also my older brothers name:LOL:

Look's like we have a same bank😅 Some things I trust on quality but something like cutting disks cheaper option is totally fine.

Nice! Looks like you might have a chance to purchase one:LOL: You have to show some cool 3d printed household and beauty items for Mrs Liane from Thingiverse and she is sold;) It sure is a fun toy to have. I purchased mine a couple moths ago and have used two kilos of filament already😅

T-Handle, I like your shop security system. Someone would really have to have a nut loose to try to overtake such a system. :bounce:

Late summer early autumn update

Hi Garage Journal! And sorry for a lag of updates. I've been super busy. I have few projects going in the workshop and one pretty cool one but later from that.
My wife came from work one day and informed the maintenance guy (witch is me) that the air conditioner isn't working in her car. We had a nice warm weathers in late august.
Next weekend I took a look at the car and found this 😅

My best guess is that someone with a trailer or a large truck backed up in front of my wife's car when it was parked. It was funny that outside everything looked okay. One small crack on the front bumper. I interrogated my wife too but no confess about a crash with a pole or a wall:ROFLMAO:
I removed the bumper and a ton of broken plastic fell from inside😅

The air condition radiator was bend about two inches and broken. Front bumper support, fan and the fan support shell was totally wrecked.

No time or date when it happened, no witnesses so no insurance from this accident:confused:

I ordered new parts from Estonia, way cheaper there. New radiator, bumper, fan and fan support 250€. Not bad fortunately. Took about a week to deliver.

I still have to fix the bumper when my wife have a longer vacation, or maybe I hunt a used one if the price is right.

Well the car is working now nice. My friend has a car shop so he filled up the air conditioner, no leaks there anymore.

Superhero statues

One of the side projects I've had going on since I bought the 3D printer. I found some cool models from Thingiverse and have been printing them every now and then when the printer is free😅
I scaled the models for same size and height so I can make a row of my favorites.

The printer does a decent job but I want these to be shiny. I used some filler and filler primer. After a lot of sanding they came out smooth for paint. I'm doing one color only. I think I have to do the Mando again, There was something wrong in my old wheel paint spray can.

I did some stands for the statues from oak. Finally got a change to use my new Makita router. I like it!

Nelli likes the humming of the printer because it covers the noise I'm making😅

So far I have..

Mr Wilson

Mr Wayne

I would like to do a Dredd and a Ironman but can't quite get the scale right. I have to search more for the right model. I would like to do small brass tags for the stands. I guess I have to save some money for the laser engraving attachment for the 3d printer😅

IMG_1641-XL.jpg

I updated the printer with stiffer springs so no more leveling the bed problems(y)

Well that's all for now. I have to post more to keep these shorter.. Have a great weekend everybody(y)

Awesome T!
Great trick with the filler. I know the 3D printing is the cool part, but I have to say the oak stands look great too -- great choice with the router profiling, that detail and the oak contrast really nice with the colorful statues!
