should the temperature, pressure, relief valve be mounted horizontal or vertical? thanks.

Vertical generally. Read the installation instructions and they will indicate mounting limitations. I was recently doing some re-pipe to connect the manifolds for the bathroom radiant I had added and when draining the boiler used the prv to let a little air into the system so the boiler could drain. I ended up after recharging the system, having to drain it back down to replace the prv, which was just weeping by a bit due to debris in the seat area. It is easy to be tempted to do as I did, but avoid it if you can.

Swampcat technicaly most TPR's are made to go either way . On most electric water heaters they are on the top and therfore verticle on most Gas hot water heaters they are on the side and horizontal .

My experience is that when mounted horizontally, you stand the chance of getting crud on the seat area if the valve actuates preventing a total seal when the valve re seats. We seem to get better service life out of valves mounter vertically.

If kept clean, they will work in any orientation. Aiming it down keeps it cleaner and directs any flow downward. It would **** to have it relieve scalding hot water up like a fountain.

any direction but the local code may require it on the top of the tank and very important
1 - NEVER PLUG TP VALVE
2 - NEVER REDUCE THE OUTLET SIZE PIPING
3 - ALWAYS PIPE TO WITHIN 6 INCHES OF FLOOR - SOME CODES ONLY ALLOW YOU TO DUMP OUTSIDE THE BUILDING WITH AN AIR GAP FITTING INSIDE THE BUILDING
