I have a gas furnace with the room t-stat located in the living room, mounted on the wall 55 inches above a baseboard return air intake grill....

Does the t-stat always have to be located close to a return air intake ? I would like to move it to a more central location point of our tri-level home, if that is possible. thanks,

Then move it! No, there is no reason to be that close to the return air duct, I would prefer my thermostats be where I am, that's where I want the temp to be 'right'.

Just mount on an interior wall if possible. (Some newer digital units can be set to compensate for exterior wall mountings...) I have measured a two to three degree difference between an interior wall and the outside wall in my kitchen. (The gradient spot I measure is right next to a window, which is why it is so bad...)
