t30 ingersoll rand flywheel walking off.

So I bought a t30 Ingersoll rand 242 converted to a single phase motor. The flywheel is now walking off shaft of the compressor. So I tightened the pinch bolt with the magic double wrench method and it still walks slowly put each time it runs it slowly coming off the shaft. So what give I've had the same still of compressor before and never any issue. Should I drill the flywheel for a set screw a little red loctite on the shaft or what ? Thanks guys.

Degrease everything thoroughly and use red Loctite. Let it set overnight. Make sure the pulleys are exactly aligned so there's no side thrust.

Wipe the shaft and inside of the flywheel with paint thinner. Let it dry and put it back on. Should be dry as a bone. Locktite will let it slip.

Is there debris stuck in the gap where the bolt goes that is keeping the pinch bolt from pinching the flywheel to the shaft?

The woodruff key is installed. Debris in the gap is a really good question. I want to say no but will check tomorrow. Belt alignment is possible but the first time it happened the belt alignment was dead nuts and it still. Walked looks like I'm down to checking the gap and cleaning up with lacquer thinner and see what happens from there. Any other Possibilities or suggestions ? Should I scuff the shaft and id of the flywheel with the emery to give it some bite ? Or will this just loosen the interference fit ?

just to muddy the water - i have the same pump and I had to put a wedge in the pulley just to get it on the crank.
is the pulley facing the right direction? there is an arrow indicating direction it should be visible when at the back of the pump

The rotation arrow is facing out. New pulley isn't really an option I haven't been able to find one for sale anywhere I can only imagine the price if I can.

I don't think scuffing the shaft will have any more benefit than simply cleaning it. You might try biasing the belt a little towards pulling the pulley inward. However, I see some other dynamics at work here but I'm not versed on this subject well enough to describe them. Does it run true or wobble?

It runs true. Now we wait there is nothing in the gap great idea on the wedge idea on the flywheel I used a big chisel for a wedge cleaned up the shaft and the id of the wheel and locktited the dog pee out of it so now we wait and pray that did the trick or I will have to try get a new flywheel or have this one bored and sleeved which sounds expensive !

If all else fails, could you simply drill through the flywheel hub and pump shaft, then drive in a roll pin to lock it in place?

I don't know that a roll pin would be strong enough to retain it all maybe though. I thinking I would try a set screw first. But then comes an issue with the fan blades on the flywheel to cool the compressor getting in the way of drill so I hope this works or I don't know what the heck to do next.

Did you torque the bolts down far enough? If so and you still have problems there is probably wear between the components.

There is only one pinch bolt and I double wrenched it as tight as I could get with 300 pound 6 foot 6 frame so I hope like hell there tighten enough. I was a little worried I was going to break the bolt. Oh there is wear for sure the back of flywheel is wallowed out pretty good and the shaft is rough for a machined finish.

You might be able to get some shim stock in between the flywheel and the shaft so that it takes up the slack enough for the flywheel to clamp down and not come loose.

At the moment it is holding I marked the shaft ran it twice and changed the oil seems good to go but time will tell. There is no room for shim stock I had to spread the flywheel with wedge to get it off.

If you take it apart again you should be able to insert a small section of shim stock if only .005 with the chisel wedged. You shouldn't have to bear down like that on the pinch bolt and yes, you will break it. Get a new grade 8 one if you remove the bolt.

Yeah we will see. I think it has bigger issues the crank is jumping around now that is running I see it so I don't know if I should tear it down or run it till I pukes the crank or a rod.

Yeah I need to just open the case and see what the heck is going on before it eats itself. The good news there isn't metal in the oil as I just changed it last night.
