My detached garage is 28'x30' with 9’ ceiling. I'm thinking about evenly spacing three 8-ft T5 (Model # TZR 2 54T5HO) strip lights across the 30' span. How many rows are needed for woodworking - 3 or 4 rows

At 9', you probably should consider t8's instead. That's pretty low for T5HO's. As for design, search for the lighting article at Sawmill Creek as its well done.

I agree on T8's because of the lesser cost. There are T8 HO fixtures. If you want T5, I'd think 3 rows would be plenty, but you may end up with some really bright spots vs. an even lighted area.

Be aware when figuring lengths of fixtures, the T5HO 4 bulb strips are about 92" long as the bulbs are not 4 ft. I think this was done to prevent the newer bulbs from being retrofitted into older fixtures.

Also, the ONLY T8HO bulbs and fixtures manufactured are ones that use 8 ft bulbs. There are NO 4 ft T8HO bulbs manufactured.
