I retired from being facilities director at a large public school. While there, we replaced gym lights with T-5s. They were instant on (old lights had to warm up) and they were so bright you almost needed sunglasses, while using much less electricity. We also saved electricity because since they were instant on, they got turned off when not in use rather than being left on all day to avoid warmup periods.
Kids used to throw balls at the lights and break them. I had our district electrician source lights that are specified for jail use, so a baseball bat won't break them. We never had a service call for broken lights after that. Service calls were a pain, because we had to disrupt the instructional day to bring in our lift and service lights. Not any more. Saving electricity left more money to buy cool stuff for my office!
