Putting around 15 8' t-8 strip lights in my shop and looking around at bulbs. I know I want 4', 5000k 32w bulbs, but after that it seems like the options are limitless. Are the cheaper brands ok to use? (as opposed to phillips, Sylvania, etc...) how much real world difference is there in lumens between say, 2600 and 3000? How about CRI? Looking for best value and advice.

Yes, the name brands are better. They use better quality materials. They'll last longer and are less tempermental. Cheaper brands are known for inflating their data, too. There shouldn't be a huge difference in price between the cheapies and the name brands on T8 lamps. New T8's have to be at least 80 CRI, which is good. I wouldn't pay for higher CRI for a work shop.
The difference between 2600 lumens and 3000 lumens is 13%. :)
Good luck,
CD

Thanks guys. I guess I do have another question, is there a huge difference in ballast quality in light fixtures? Going with 8' t-8 strip lights from home depot and I see so many options online it's hard to see any differences

philips-advance, GE, Universal, Sylvania are the best. Accupro, fulham, Hatch, are generics.

My advice is similar to others:
Stick with the name brands, but don't bother with any of their fancy models unless you have a true need. Couldn't see why in a garage, but that's up to you.

I usually end up with Philips lamps, but any of the name brands should be fine.
