T8 fixture spacing?

18x26 metal building. grey painted metal on inside. 9ft walls 12ft peak.

i have built a 30" loft in a U shape 7ft all the way around the building. i want my light to focus down and not on the loft area. i will also have lights under the loft shelf for toolboxs and my workbench area.

do i need to evenly space the lights, or can i mount them in close proximity towards the peak of the gable? i have 4ft 4bulb tandem lights. 8 each side for 16 total.

my thinking is close together and higher up will light the area better. farther apart and a few feet lower and it may cast more light into the loft areas which isnt needed.

Let's at least try to be clear... Do you mean the "loft" is 7 feet wide and 30 inches down from the top plates? Or 30 inches wide and 7-feet off the floor? Or something else entirely?

So you expressly WANT to keep the loft dark? How will you see to find whatever is stored there, or whatever?

As discussed previously (cf. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3505000&postcount=5), the ideal layout will depend on what you're doing where WITHIN the space.

That is something of an oxymoron. So-called "tandem" T5/T8 fixtures are typically 8-feet long. A four-foot four-bulb fixture is NOT a "tandem" -- and, as also previously discussed (cf.http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3523406&postcount=6 and http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3523406&postcount=10), would be a lousy choice for your application.

Howinhell are you fitting a run of eight fixtures into a 26-foot-long space?!? If they really are tandems, that would be 64 feet, even butting them tight end-to-end. Even if they're only four feet each, they STILL wont fit!

Your "thinking" is almost certainly incorrect. But too much depends on all the stuff we DON'T know to be much more specific than that.

You appear to be very confused.

Normally, you want to distribute the light as evenly as possible across the entire space. To that end, the higher the lights are mounted, the more opportunity their output has to spread out to the sides before reaching "working height" (whatever that may be in this case). Conversely, the lower they are mounted, the smaller the area they will effectively illuminate.

As for fixture-fixture spacing, cramming them all together ALSO hinders distribution, and thus limits the area they will effectively illuminate. And (again, conversely) the further apart the fixtures are spaced, the more you also spread the light out over a larger area -- but this is effectively limited by the mounting height, because if you go both too far apart AND too low, you create "spotty" uneven lighting.

Spotty uneven light is what I don't want. Loft is 7ft high. 30" out from wall. Keep all my floor space for working. Only 18 wide, floor width is at a premium. Fixtures are 8ft in length total. I have 4 of them. 16 bulbs. 8 bulbs each side. 4ft t8 bulbs in fixtures

I would mount them in two strips two foot off the peak. Then look for some additional lighting to hang off of the "loft" in key areas.

Ok - as I'm interpreting your OP

Your going to treat the ceiling space as 21' x 16.5' building. That is your 26'x18' minus the 7' high 30" wide "Loft" (shelves). I have shelves too and they are a lighting pain in the ****.

Now the fixtures you have toss out a lot of light. Don't know for sure as you didn't provide a picture or model number - but I'm thinking 9ea fixtures (4tube T-8s) would easily put you in the 100 candle / ft range

As for spacing - put a line down the middle, now another line 2/3 of the way to the edge of the shelves. Do this twice - once for width - and once for depth. 'X' marks the spot where you place your lights

Now as for the remaining unused fixtures - sell them on craigslist so you can buy a few 2' single tube T-8s. Your going to want to place these "Strategically" under the loft around the perimeter of your shop. Your probably going to be looking at 8 of these fixtures, but it really depends on what you are placing under the loft that counts.

Good. Glad to hear it. HOWEVER... Now that we have "The Rest Of The Story", it is clear that the fixtures you currently have on hand are far from ideal in that respect. More on that in a moment...

Understood, I think. From your earlier comments, I gather that at least most of the "under loft" area will be occupied by workbenches, toolchests, stationary tools, etc.? That leaves approximately 13 feet of "open" space in the middle, where you will presumably place any vehicles to be worked on, etc.?

OK, obviously, that is a rather different situation than I'd gleaned from your earlier comments.

Four fixtures, each eight feet long, is inadequate to cover the full length of that center section, presuming two symmetrical "fore & aft" runs. That part of your shop floor is 26 feet long. So even using "best case" spacing, you're looking at "lengthwise" gaps of 2-1/2 feet at each end (which is not terrible in itself, if still wide of ideal) and five feet in the middle (which IS terrible, especially in that most-critical "middle of the shop" location where presumably much of the work will be done). Had you gone with individual 4-foot fixtures, as previously suggested, you could easily keep those inter-fixture gaps down to no more than about a foot or so (which, with decent mounting height, would effectively "dissappear").

As I see it, you have two choices at this point...

1. - If those 8-foot fixtures are returnable, do so, and replace them with at least TEN 4-foot twin-tube fixtures. Put five of these fixtures in each of two fore/aft runs, with the end-to-end gaps kept as equal as possible, and no more than 1-1.5 feet (preferably less; you can **** them tight together if need be). Space these runs apart laterally by about 1/3 to 1/2 of the width of the "open" section (i.e., about 4.5-6 feet -- I'd probably lean toward the latter). Then augment this with additional task lighting under the "loft", as needed (the details of which will depend on more stuff we don't yet know)

2. - If the 8-foot fixtures are NOT returnable, then either use them for the under-loft runs, and do as above for the main section, OR... Add one additional four-foot twin-tube fixture to each run, presumably placed between the two 8-footers. This will bring the total "run length" of each strip back up to 20 feet; but you'll still have to live with somewhat larger inter-fixture gaps than would be ideal.

In BOTH cases (but especially the latter), mount these fore/aft runs as high as practical, so as to give the light the best chance of spreading out and ameliorating the dim spots resulting from the inter-fixture gaps.

Depending on the details of how you're going to use this space, there is also a possible alternative approach... Put the main runs under the very outer edges of the loft, all the way around, and again keeping the end-end gaps as small as possible. Then add ONE additional run centered between the other two and as high as possible (all the way up at the ridge line, if possible). This will provide somewhat better illumination of the sides of any vehicles parked in the middle of the space (which is likely one of the primary work areas), but require more fixtures.

lots of good info here. friend came over today and suggested to add a center row on a different switch for a total of 3 rows. im going to run with what i have now and see how it goes when i flip the switch. the way i have it figured, im just above the 100 lumen formula, although i do understand that spreading out the light as mentioned is better than having it all in one spot. he also mentioned that i could have some white metal bent as reflectors to keep the light focused towards the floor. no problem in wiring in another circuit if light output is not adequate. i will have a couple twin tube fixtures under my workbench, and probably a single bulb under each of my toolboxes because you know how dark drawers can get even with the sun out.

total of 4 fixtures. they are tandem 4ft t8. 16 bulbs total. 5000K it is very bright. i didnt expect it to be lit so well. the color is spot on for my eyes.

80-100ft from the building
