Excuse my ignorance- how does the bulb know if it's mounted high or not?
I have 14 ft ceilings & cheapo HD $37.00 8 ft 4 tube T8 fixtures & they work fine.

Its the reflector and how the light is focused. High bay lights tend to focus the light more tightly, low bay lights tend to spread the light more. High bay lights tend to have no or very little up-lighting, while low bay lights usually have a fairly large percentage of up-lighting.

Hmmmmm
Interesting.
Since he's flush mounting to a 15 ft white ceiling- would it make that much difference?

I think you may be wasting money on high bay lighting. My understanding is high bay is considered 20 ft and higher. I think you would be fine with standard T8 fixtures.

I like this, this is what i am looking for. I like the polished reflectors. Home Depot has Lithonia 6 T8 High Output (95% polished reflectors) for $79 each, but requires hanging from the ceiling by chain.

I also like the Home Depot Lithonia 6 bulb T8 fixtures. I would like to screw them right to the ceiling for a cleaner look. I have not done anything due to not knowing if the ballast gets so hot they MUST be hung by a chain or not. Does anyone have any experiance with this issue?

Typically the instructions detail the recommended mounting method. I would check there 1st. The cooler the better. They are electronics....

I just installed six of these on 16' ceilings and I flush mounted them. It just involves removing the reflectors. I don't see why it would be a problem. I think they are just trying to cover their rear end because they don't want anyone opening the unit. I had a bad one out of the box and simply returned it for a new one at HD.

So far they are great. Time will tell about the heat.

Just got this response from Lithonia on the Home Depot fixture:

The IB fixture was UL tested and approved at 18” below the mounting surface. The channel houses the ballasts and needs the air flow to help with heat issues. We can not and do not recommend any closer.

I figured they would officially say this. The question is "off the record" what can you do?

I'll keep everyone updated if I have any problems. When I get my tools moved in I'll take my IR gauge and get a reading. I have them flush mounted to concrete 16' off the floor and they don't feel excessively hot.

Of course, the air is considerably warmer up there. The channel they speak of that holds the ballasts has zero openings for cooling so the only cool factor would be dissipation of heat. I might feel differently if I was mounting them on drywall/wood but concrete.

I just can't stand hanging lights. They collect tons of dust and dirt and always seem to be filthy. I'm always cleaning the ones I have now and I swore never again.
