Just bought a pair of Lithonia Industrial 6-Light High Bay Hanging Fluorescent Fixtures from Home Depot for my 2 1/2 car garage with 10' ceilings.

http://www.homedepot.com/s/t8+light+fixture?NCNI-5

Home Depot said they could be surface mounted using the attic crawl space beams, but the installation instructions recommend against surface mounting, and to use HC36 chain hangers instead. What is the optimal mounting method for those of you that use these or something similar?

Can't wait to get these bad boys hooked up!@

Thanks in advance.

I'd guess they recommend against flush mounting to allow some heat to disappate from the ballast.

The strip lights I mounted on the other side of the garage, I used some 3/4" blocks to gain some area between the light and ceiling. I've had no issues with them but the new ones I put up, I flush mounted them as it's a lower ceiling.

High bay fixtures are for high ceilings, such as in warehouses where the ceilings are 18 - 20 feet high. 10 feet may be a little low.

In my old shop I mounted hanging T8 fixtures to the joists using 1x2 spacers, one on each end of the fixture. Used a 1/8" bit to drill the fixture back and through the spacers, them mounted each end with a 2" drywall screw.
