I know this has been beaten to death around here, but im not finding any general rule of thumb, just specific user details...

basic 20x28x8 garage...seems like i should be shooting for 80ish foot candles, so that works out to around 16 4' T8 2bulb fixtures. good.

now the real question....how far from walls do I mount them? Also, how far apart can I get away from each fixture before you start to notice a gap in lighting?

redline9k,

We didn't do any photometric studies on my 50x74 shop, we just installed what fit. So I guess our rule-of-thumb was "install what fits". In my case, there was room for thirty five "eight foot fixture with four T-8 four foot lamps". There are five lights each on the five trusses and two short walls.

The lights on the short walls are angled out with brackets.

The lights on the bottom of the trusses are screwed to the bottom of the trusses.

The distance between the five trusses is twelve feet. The distance from trusses to walls are fourteen and twelve feet.

We're hoping to get power sometime "in the next one to five business days". Then, we'll find out if it's enough.

If I decide there isn't enough light, we'll install additional lights on the long walls. There is room for six lights on the back wall and three lights on the door side wall.

Download one of the free photometric calculators, and they will tell you everything. The spacing from a wall to the first row is 1/2 the spacing for the rest. Having extra light on a wall really makes a room look brighter and more even.
