Table Hoist

I need some advice from all you creative guys. I need to make/buy something to be able to lift generators from the ground on to my work bench (33inches).
Any ideas? I have a super heavy duty work bench made from 2 inch sqaure steel. The guy owned a trailer hitch shop that made it. He used the square tube that you have for trailer hitches.

Any thoughs?? Maybe an engine hoist modified??

"A" frame with a chainfall. Chainfall on an I Beam you already have. Not sure if the engine hoist will give you enough height. Small scissor lift. Small winch and pulley system.I lift my diesel generator with a chainfall I have on an existing I Beam. I think it weighs in at 400lbs give or take a little.

What sort of a budget do you have? And is this going to be at your garage, or is this a place of business that would have to have a lift certified?

Do a search for "FLOOR MOUNTED LIFTING HOIST", and you come across a lot of different ideas. Some are made like a jib crane with a pole mounted to the floor and a crane swiveling around. One good example is Tripps Garage, who is a member on here. He added a lift in the corner of his garage so he could lift heavy items to his mill.

There are many ways that you can make a lift. They make lift carts that the plate is down to the floor, but then you pump a pedal to raise the plate up. It's a glorified hydraulic hand truck. The one I used at work when doing die repair would lift quite a few hundred pounds. Some of our dies went up to the 500# range and maybe more. The lift would go 4'+ on the hand truck.

Ours were bought from Grainger. Then you have what they call BIG JOE, which is more electric.

Or what about something like a hydraulic motorcycle lift? You could roll the generator onto it, then either pump it by foot, or hit a button and raise it.

In many mower shops the forego moving it to a worktable so the whole thing is permanently mounted to the floor. The ones I'm familiar with have an electric motor to do the lifting.

Its for home use & the table is outside next to the workshop. I use it all year except for winter. I can start the units & spray what I need & it;s all outside. I pulled my back lifting a unit in October & thought I would ask. I work on small engines & wold love not to keep bending over & lifting or bending over to repair (i'm getting old).

That is a MoJack. They were advertised pretty heavily a couple years ago on the tube. We have one to lift the front of our JD so we can clean out underneath the deck without pulling the deck off.

If it was me, I'd bolt the table to the floor and build a small jib crane to go on the left rear corner with a 1/4-ton chainfall. (Because I prefer to work on the right front corner of a workbench.)

Got room and support above to place a I beam by table ? I beam and trolley from open floor area to above table makes life easier. To really don't need too much iron for 500 pounds. I have a 4'' aluminum I beam above mine with a 1/2 ton chain fall and trolley. Saves your back.

I have one of these, notice that the wheels, can be extended forward and outward, also the boom, adds a lot of versatility. Unlike then fold up deals, that flex.

Hf $89-25% coupon. It's a fine piece of equipment that went together in about five minutes.

I think 26" height is the limit.

Yep. Limited by the hydraulic ram.

I have something similar to this. That way I can take heavy items out of the back of my truck or on the floor and put it on just about anywhere that can reach. Put it in a good spot and you will wonder how you lived without it.

I have one that is similar to that. I turned it into a small welding/fabrication/assembly/etc. table. The handle was in the way so I removed it and fabricated a foot operated release pedal. It's rated for 660 lbs. and has been quite handy for a number of things.

I see in an earlier post he said he spotted some kind of picker on CL for 75$,,, that would be worth a look if it was local.

I love the picker because of the simplicity and the cost and there isn't much home/hobby/diy a guy probably couldn't do with it. They handle a V8 engine. I am commercial and have one a size bigger but have buds with the 2t and they seem to manage.

I cannot imagine an engine hoist not being up to the job. Here, I am lifting a 1300# machine (590 KG), with a custom-built spreader arm. Once you are on flat ground, you can move it around. The lighter the load, the longer you can extend the arm and the higher it will lift.

I've used my engine hoist to lift things onto my lift table (post #35) and then pushed them off of the table onto my bench. My problem (and may be the OP's ) is that I can't get the legs of my hoist under my bench.

They are so portable and so affordable. Its about the second rigging thing a guy should own right after a 4000# wire cumalong. Those are about 40$ and really good too. After those wont work then its time to start thinking of alternatives of if there was a specialty etc but for maintenance work would be a first option.

A engine hoist is one heck of a handy item. There was a guy that replaced the casters with larger pneumatic tires for off road use for moving. Got it to where it was need and used wood cribbing if wheels were to little for the lift.
I even used mine to switch rear tractor tires from turf to agricultural bar for the winter. Another tool for the shop.
