Table project

I milled a sugar maple a while ago one of the limbs had a curve to it so I came up with this. The benches for it came out of the same limb and follow the curve of the table.

Hope to have it done soon, have a few other traditional furniture jobs to finish first

A little more progress on the table today.

The length of the table is 6' I am thinking about a design for some end chairs for it now.

Are you going to fill in the "cracks" in the table top with some clear epoxy before finishing, or just let them be three separate pieces AND what will your finish be?
That looks pretty darn AMAZING. Can't wait to see it complete!!!

I've used Osmo for tables, benches and bar tops for a few years now.

Holds up well, but more importantly it easy to work repairs.

And, it's Green!(what ever that means)

The finish will be clear, I will spray varithane water based floor finish on it have been using it for a year with good results. I use Cambell post cat conversion varnish on projects but have been getting away from solvent based finishes when I can. The varithane is very tough and compound buffs nicely.

Sometimes I go simple and wipe 50 percent thinned poly, it comes out as smooth as a sprayed finish but takes days to get done.The dining table for our house I did that way

The gaps in the boards will stay no fill.

Sprayed it with varithane water based floor finish been using it for a while with good results.

A bit of a learning curve on application compared to traditional solvent based finishes.

I will let it cure for a few days and wet sand with 1500 and buff out will be like glass then.

Thanks, it will be sold I have no room left unless we remove stuff from the house.

Some pieces are hard to let go, but there is always the next one to make.

is there much hand work involved in these builds, or is the cnc router used most of the time?

very imaginitive design, and I can't fathom the time involved in programming a cnc to place all the butterflies perfectly (if done by cnc)
if done by hand, I'm even more impressed!



is there any concern if seated in the middle, leaning back a bit. "looks" like the legs are in front of the rear most part of the bench... pics can be deceiving though.

There is a lot of handwork, CNC is a small part of the overall job, the trestle base is cut on cnc as were the top keys, the programing is simple for the key layout, I make 3 files one at 90 degrees one at 15 and one at -15 the key zero point is its center. So I just manually run the router to the point I want to rout at zero the machine to that table coordinate and select the appropriate file.

The major handwork is all the before all that happens I get logs of odd shapes and mill them with a Alaskan chainsaw mill setup, then they air dry for a few months before going into the drying kiln to get down to 8-10 percent moisture. Properly dried lumber is important wood with a high moisture content will most likely move and split in a piece of furniture ruining a lot of effort.

Some milled boards will sit around for years before I find the right project for them if they are unique.

This table project is some of the last pieces I milled from two blowdowns from hurricane sandy.
