table saw welding table

hey folks.I'm the proud new owner of a new Miller 211 auto set mig welder I picked up from a young kid who just lost interest in his pickup rebuild & needed some cash. Looking into welding classes at local night school,as I recently was able to take early retirement & I want to learn to weld well with this new machine!......looking at welding table ideas & have an older SEARS cast top table saw , 46" x 30 " top....solid middle & open web side tables. going to scrap it , it's on a dollie with casters & moves easily, what do you guys think ?.... ready made welding table or is my enthusiasm a little crazy ?Any thoughts + or - welcome..........sorry 4 long post....thz folks!

I'd say go for it. Or use it to help build a new frame that would be easier to work with and hold all your welding supplies. You could then use the top from the table saw. Win win

Definitely check out the classes. I took a MIG class that was 2 nights a week about 3 hrs each for I think 3 months and cost like $120. It was a blast, and I learned a bit too.

find a scrap yard that sells used steel. around me a couple yards sell used steel (plate, angle, sq tube, etc) for $.50/ lb. cheaper than paying new prices. i found a ladder rack at my local pick n' pull (car junk yard) made of 2"x1"x1/4" steel channel on a full size 8 ft pick-up bed that went over the cab. it cost me $18 and was enough steel to build a table frame with.

just throwing out options. welding is fun, half of the fun is scrounging up material on the cheap.

That's probably a decent idea for your first welding table. It'll give you a place to work and will get you started.
It's not the ideal solution, but a LOT better than a lot of things people are using!
After you start welding different projects, you'll come up with a better solution for a table. But right now, I'd definitely use the saw.

I think it's a great idea, I' actually headed down the same path right now.

In the "welding table thread" a guy used a two wheeler to mount his table top on. It folds up when in use, then folds down for storage. I'm going to do the same thing, but am also going to mount the welder on the 2 wheeler.
