After months of lurking and getting ideas from all of you here are pictures of my garage being built. Dimensions are 24 X 40. A high school kid smashed through my old garage (I live on a corner) and that allowed me to build this:

Can't say enough good things about my contractor!

Will Post more pictures as things come along..

Wow, I love the idea of a double deep garage, and you like your contractor! Lucky you, hopefully the kid paid for most of the new garage ;-)

Looks good. It'll be interesting to see how you fill it.

Since you had someone drive into the previous garage, what are you planning on doing to keep someone from jumping the curb and hitting the new one?

Believe you me, it will be filled quickly. I had to do the double deep because of town ordinances. Had I done it the normal way I would have had to push the garage back a minimum of 20 feet from the property line. That would have placed the garage pretty much NEXT to the pool. The double deep works fine because I don't take my Alfa's out all the time so no problems there.

I have been thinking about that, most probably a large ornamental rock. But seeing he hit my house first, richoted off that and then accelerated into the garage I can never guess what the trajectory would be if there may ever be another one.

What Alfa's do you have? My brother has owned a couple over the years, and currently has a GT Junior on a quasi-rotisserie in his garage.

I have an 1983 GTV6 and a 1987 Milano Verde. The Verde was in the garage at the time of "impact." Poor girl swung 45 degrees and hit the new Ariens and the ninja. The Ninja sustained left hand side fairing damage but never fell over as the kick stand got caught under the alfa and held it up. The main damage was to three sides of the Milano. I was not happy.

Ouch...that idiot must have been flying to do so much damage even after using your house to slow down. :(

My bro had a GTV for a while, not sure what year it was though. Nice cars...

Looks good, got any pics of the crashed garage?

I would seriously consider some sort of barrier to keep that from happening again.

I did have some pictures but took them down to make way for the pictures of the new garage. When I get a chance I'll post one.

Well seeing he hit the house and then accelerated into the garage, I should do something!

nice. that Guigiaro GTV has really aged well. The Verde was a wonderful car in '87: RWD, ABS, inboard rear disks, real Recaros, and that 3.0 sohc is maybe one of the all time great sports sedan engines. The package would've been a sensation and saved Alfa in the US if only, if only... well what were they thinking with that bodywork?

Congrats on the garage looks like it will be a nice size

I figured I would post the finished garage pictures ran out of $$ so i didn't sheet rock the interior but insulated and used the TEKFOIL for the ceiling. 20 minutes of running the heater brings it up to temp nicely!

No they were from Sears. "Ultimate Garage" is the brand. So far I am happy with them. I got them on double sale (they were on sale and then they had a special sale with like another 10 or 15% off.)

Did the insurance company help pay for a whole new garage?

No offense meant, but from that one pic, the damage didn't seem that bad to garage.
Granted I wouldn't want ANY myself, but why didn't the insurance just make you fix the damage?
Or did you just opt for an opportunity out of your own pocket to put up a whole new building?

I hope his insurance paid in full for damages to all the contents and vehicles inside.

Beautiful new garage! Don't let your home insurance lapse!

I have been looking at those cabinets for awhile. They aren't priced to bad but it would be nice to catch the on sale.

Our local Sears has them priced higher than the website. I asked if they could give me the same price and they said no. The manager said I had to drive home, order them online to be picked up at the store and come back for them?????

Sounds like the thing to do, the Sears prices are the best I've seen, aside from when I got mine online from Costco (they don't have them in stock right now). They are nice units for the money. The hardware is real nice and they are heavy!

Yes the insurance took care of it but with some help from me. The old garage had oak timbers for the floor and it had a crawl space under it. When the car hit the side of the garage, it hit the black alfa and spun it 45 degrees, which took out the new snowblower and the motorcycle in addition to the Alfa. Back to the oak floors, he hit the oak right in line with the bumper and effectively turned the garage into a parallelogram. The east wall was pretty much holding the thing up. The floor came out the other side.
The contractor took the oak timbers and ripped them to create the inside step to the side door. So there is a little piece of the old garage in the new. I have to polyeurothane it soon so it stays nice.

OOPS forgot about the cabinets. They were pretty easy to assemble. Of all the pieces I only had a problem with one of the cabinets. There are inserts that you thread the stud into for the joining cams was not tapped. Other than that they were nice and quick to assemble.

Very nice to hear you made out OK... too many people usually end up with the short end of the stick when dealing with insurance companies.

Yes thanks THX 138, I made out well on the garage but not so well on the motorcycle accident later on in the year. Win some, lose some.

Thanks Throttle jockey, I have to remind myself it is really mine sometimes. Actually that is my 79 Vespa in the corner.
