Pretty much all the wireless carriers are soulless money suckers. My mother and stepdad have had Verizon for years. He died a few months ago. She went in to get a new phone. They had paid about $100/month for like 5 years for a couple of basic flip phones.

She just wanted something newer. The turd at the Verizon store charged her $150 for another basic cell phone. She should've been entitled to a free phone as she hadn't gotten one for years. And they even made her sign a new 2 year contract even though she had fulfilled her contract obligations years ago.

If I were there, she would've gotten a nice Windows smart phone (actually easier to use than her flip phone) for free (which she should've been entitled to). They prey on the elderly and ignorant.

I am liking my Windows phone (Nokia Lumia 520, $60 at Wal-Mart unsubsidized). I pay $40/month for AT&T GoPhone service (unlimited minutes/texts, 1 GB of data) -- no contracts. I just bought a 32 gb micro SD card for it, and have about 40 of my favorite CD's ripped to it. Windows phones are nice -- even nicer without a contract.

Yeah this would make me flip, I don't buy anything from my carrier just so I don't have to deal with the counter people. Paid full price for my phone and will ride it to the grave

ATT and worse. Get this, you never ever own your phone even if you pay for it. You sign up for a contract and pay monthly for the phone for a year or 2 years (depends on what you choose). Then at the end of the term that money is applied as a credit to your next phone-which you must trade your old one in for-even if you want the same phone! Small price to pay for unlimited everything huh?

Around here its verizon or nothing, no other carrier has the coverage they do.

ATT also tries to trick you into changing your plan to increase your payment. They are the COMCAST of mobile phones.

They're all bad. One can mitigate it by not signing a contract. I only pay $40/month for an AT&T GoPhone no contract plan. The phone itself was $60 total price and is a smart phone. Does everything a $700 iPhone can do. I get unlimited texts/unlimited phone calls and one GB of data monthly, which is plenty for occasional web usage on the go to research stuff. Can't watch Netflix on the data plan (just use your wi-fi).

Like New refurbished for $35. Wow, crazy good price.

No carrier gives you a free phone, regardless of how long you have been a customer, unless you sign a new contract. If you want to stay off contract, you have to pay full price for a phone, which is generally a lot.

That said, $150 for a basic phone and a new contract doesn't sound right.

Go with Page Plus. (starts at $12/mo) Buy your own phone (ex: Droid X2 - $75).

You'll be using Verizon towers but won't have to deal with them.

I don't understand why people sign these 2 yr cell phone contracts???

They are all the same and I credit you for posting the video. I feel the same way about Verizon, At&T (where is came from) and currently Cablevision.

The only answer is to force them to keep your business by leaving if they mess with you.

I hope sprint treats you better. I was with Sprint but the coverage did not work for me in my area.

That's what my friend said. I see your not offering the apparent right info however

I believe what your friend said is true, but it's an optional plan. Verizon has something similar now. I talked to one of their salesmen about it, and really didn't see any benefit other than being able to upgrade a couple months early. But I have a coworker who does it and thinks it's the greatest thing ever... :dunno:

Stopped by the Verizon store by my Home Depot. They wanted to charge me $3 to pay cash for my bill...WTF?
Sprint does the same thing but I think it's $6. It pisses me off. It also seems like they try to sneak add on fees to the bill every month. I'm constantly calling to get it corrected. Snakes.

Your "friend"...? But no first hand experience?

I have three samsung phones from ATT since 2006. I own them all. I've had contracts with all of them. After 2 years, I keep my old phone and buy a new one if they have one I like.

Truth.

You shouldn't pump up misinformation on a forum that is as well read as this one.

I don't believe garage journal is the right forum for techno gidget gadget talk. So I will end now with, "I could not be happier than I am with AT&T. They have always treated me well".

AT&T Next works much like CJM8515 related, though there is no contract. You pay for your phone over 18-24 installments, and then trade your phone in on a new one after a certain amount of payments.

It's some new gimmick that T-Mobile started, that has filtered over to the other carriers.

For GJ'ers that don't understand the concept, it's basically like trading your car in every two years to get a new one.

No you're both wrong. You don't understand it. Try doing some research.

You can upgrade after 2 months of having the phone. You can buy the phone out right whenever you feel like it, but that is stupid. We upgrade every 12

"How AT&T Next works1

AT&T Next offers you another choice to purchase your smartphone with the flexibility to upgrade earlier.

Choose any of our latest smartphones and pay only the sales tax up front.

$0 down payment
No annual service contract
No activation, upgrade, or finance fees

AT&T Next 24 then divides the regular price of your smartphone into 30 low monthly installments.

Trade in your qualified smartphone to upgrade after 24 installments. Your payments are conveniently billed on your monthly statement.

Other Options:
AT&T Next 18: Divided into 24 installments; trade in and upgrade after 18 installments.

AT&T Next 12: Divided into 20 installments; trade in and upgrade after 12 installments.

After paying the minimum number of installments, trade in your current smartphone** and upgrade to a brand-new one. Or, with AT&T Next, you can upgrade in as little as two months when you pay the minimum number of installments early, using our Pay to Upgrade option."

It's a wonder anyone would fall for a scam like that, but as evidenced by some in this thread, they do.

You'd be better off either buying the phone outright right off the bat, or getting a subsidized phone with a 2-year contract.
