Taking Cordless Tools Camping?

Spent years camping with scouts across the Southeastern US on my trail to Eagle.

I can remember a few times here and there where a drill or a sawzall made a world of difference. Mostly camp projects and my camping trips now are mostly recreational, and now around the PNW. (Oregon)

So the question isn't should I bring them, but what else may come in handy?

All DeWalt, I've already planned to bring the wet/dry vaccum, inflator, flashlight, combination drill, and sawzall, I've also got the 20v-12v converter for USB charging, which will likely be most of the power usage.

Not taking the jigsaw but it's in the photo

Other hand tools are kept in the truck, hammer, drivers, sockets, shovel, etc....

Also not planning in taking the FlexVolt 9.0aH, not worth the weight compared to 5aH, also I still don't feel comfortable charging my cellphone or running 12v accessories off of them. 0ca5ccb9ca0ec69a0a46a06fd042d8ce.jpgcc682bcacd91b78d5f33b3fefbfeb7fd.jpg3074dd3542240c4c1636f4ed7e963a70.jpga6651ed14dc9e63d397ab84502194abc.jpg

I use my cordless fan to help me fall asleep.

That's the only thing I can think of not on your list.

Not sure if that Dewalt inverter is still available but I could see using it for camping.

The fan is on the list but too expensive at the moment! I do have some D Cell Powered fans to use at night for now

They do make an inverter still, actually 2 models I believe, don't own it either unfortunately.

Leave all that stuff home and get away from it. Isn't that the idea of camping?

Why the need for a drill camping? A vacuum?

What happened to camping and all you needed was a Swiss Army knife (or even a Leatherman), maybe a Buck Woodsman or Special knife and a hatchet?

If you "need" a saw, look for this Bahco folding saw:

Not a power tool, but I keep a dewalt stapler in the camping box. 30 degrees and raining it was very helpful to put the tent in the screened shelter and staple a tarp over the screens.

I've done my share of camping out of a backpack, but with wife and two young kids and some city neighbors, I focus on comfort at this point. If I need to bring some extra gear to make them want to go camping again, that's success.

We have 4 dogs, we use the vaccum to clean their half of the tent before we roll it up, camping on the sand dunes in Florence Oregon.

I'd really like to get one of the DeWalt lantern lights, but noone locally has one and I'll spend money on the fan first

Exactly my thinking! I only bring my 12v Milwaukie lamps with extra batteries. That’s just me.

I take my M12/M18 stuff camping when we go. Most used are the lights by far. I have the tripod light and lantern and flashlights and all are used a bunch. I take my drill/impact/high torque with me in case I need to make a repair or change a tire or something like that. Sawzall goes with but depending on where we camping I don't usually use it, if I do it's for firewood in some form. A fan would be nice, it's on my list. But last year we bought a travel trailer and usually have electricity so have air conditioning. Also I bring an electric fan or two, always seems to be almost triple digits the weeks we go camping. A tire inflator is also on the list for the just in case moments. And we bought two blow up kayakes for the kids to use so a cordless inflator would be nice.

But by far the most used cordless tool is the many lights we bring.

We started camping with a small pup tent on the Harley and graduated to a nice dome tent later when taking the grand kids camping. Now my wife's idea of camping is a Holiday Inn.
***** to get old.

I would never be able to sleep without a fan, but that,s probably the only thing I would bring with me other than a routine camping stuff (tent, bedding, skillet, lighter, etc..). The Leatherman goes everywhere with me so that's a given

As said, lights would be nice. And a sub charger for cell phone. Even the radio would be nice. I use my Dewalt radio, sub charger, lights and my Milwaukee lights during hurricane power outages.

I'd consider my DeWalt 18V flourescent light but there are some good LED lights out there now. I have a NAPA 360 rechargeable light I the car trailer.....I sleep in the trailer so it's basically camping in a different type of travel trailer.

Back when I was younger, camping was backpacking on snow shoes, a lightweight tent, a winter sleeping bag, a pad, etc. The only cordless tool was a headlamp. Fuel was butane or Coleman. Food was freeze dried. Now I am an old couch potato but the thought of dragging the whole contents of my house into the woods and calling it camping does not appeal to me. To each his own.

Bring whatever makes you happy, but please don’t be the **** who pulls in after dark and has to run the stabilizers down with your cordless impact and wake up my sleeping kids.

Also, I’m not interested in listening to your music from 3 sites away all weekend long.

Just got back from a state park.

Power tools def cross one into the Glamping category.

That said, my Ryobi lights and a sawzall with the pruning blade are super nice to have. We tend to go collect dead fall for nice hot fires, and sawzalls are normally allowed where chainsaws are banned for fire danger.

My GB40 battery booster/charger and a Bluetooth speaker. Added this year a lithium spotlight.
We only camp on crown land so not a soul around for miles. Sometimes we have the whole lake to ourselves.

While I agree I'd rather have two 5's for the gear you are bringing, but why don't you trust the 9ah? It runs like any other Dewalt battery when plugged into a 20v tool, nothing is going to blow up on you.

Take the right combination of tools and you could build some camp stools, do some carving, etc.

I second the recommendation on the lantern lights, I have a pair of the 18V Ryobis I keep in the motorhome with a couple of spare batteries and a charger, they've come in handy on more than one occasion.

The definition of camping sure has changed since I was a kid. Of course that was 50+ years ago. We thought of it as cheating if someone brought along some "city wood' so they could start a fire easier.

Car camping, bring the toolbox. But if i'm carrying it on my back, I only take the bare essentials. Last time I went out was for 3 days with a 6lb pack and 5lbs of food. Fast and light.

My Makita LED work light was very handy for Indian Princess camping trips when our daughter was younger. Of course the kids are running around like maniacs and she left my light outside somewhere. Luckily I only had to search an acre of woods to find it.
One dad had a cordless impact to assemble lumber for the big bonfire.

Best decision I ever made!

Vaccum was super useful, keep the puddles of water in the tent to a minimum, we vaccumed the dogs to get the beach sand and most of the ticks off them.

Used the sawzall to clean up the campsite, as well as help the rangers cut some PVC at the closest bathroom.

Drill didn't see much use, we did make a strainer out of a bowl with it, and the neighbors borrowed it to raise the Jack's on their RV.

Biggest complaint of the weekend other than the rain was just the business, lots of loud kids about 11pm at night and the campsite as way too close to the highway. 4097238473036f421fba329c09f2715e.jpg36206405be3e5a7b50efd7ad5f15bdd2.jpg
