Taking inventory...

I happened to have the camera out in the garage last night and decided it was a good time to take an "inventory" of my tools. IOW: Open each drawer level, take a picture, then write down the contents for record (still need to do this last bit). I also took pictures of the work bench w/ tool cases below and my two Gladiator cabinets filled with stuff.

On the plus side: As soon as I remove the electrical **** from a chest drawer & the upper open section as well as fill three 1/3 drawers that are currently not being used, I may be able to reorganize and therefore not need to upgrade my box for awhile...

On the down side: The stupid camera uses some weird USB plug and I couldn't get the pictures out easily for uploading... (For a mental picture, I have a 26" 9 dr Craftsman roll-away topped with a 12 dr drop-front Craftsman chest)

How often do you take an survey of your tool collection?

Nowhere near often enough - thanks for the prompt Ian!
I also have to move out of a rented garage unit right now - so a useful time to have a good turn-out and tidy up too... Who know's what forgotten tools or car parts I may find!

i've got photos of all my tools and equipment... also everything inside the house, for insurance purposes. hell, even all my car and motorcycle parts.
if something unfortunate should happen, i'd hate to try and remember all the things that were lost.

i've got photos, and the serial numbers from anything that has it, all stored off-site (digitally, on a server)

an added benefit, other than insurance; if items are stolen, and you file a police report, they'll love being handed pictures and serial numbers. this actually got me back some stuff, once.

We don't mess with plugging in our camera anymore, just buy one of the cheap, less than $20 reads everything card readers and pull the card and plug it into the reader. Saves on the camera battery, and generally less fuss.

I'm actually in the middle of an extensive, item by item, line inventory of my tools. I was planning on posting it up when I finish, just for fun.

I have not done that in years, I would probably take a beating on everything I have added since the last time I did an inventory.
