taking snapon sliders apart.

i have a KR655 with ball bearing slides. is there a way to get them apart to clean them up and lubricate them?


i played with one today for an hour, and got nowhere. any help would be appreciated.

advice on what to luibricate them with would also be useful.

I have removed them from my KR1000 entirely, given them a solvent bath, and then re-lubed with white grease. It's a hateful mess trying to get the drawers out, and then back in afterwards.

If yours are anything like mine, the rubber bits are long-gone; so they don't snap closed any more; and they aren't cushioned at full extension either. There was a time that the rubber pieces could be bought from Snappy; I bet they're discontinued now.

Any time my sliders have come apart, it's because they were broken.

Other than the drawer slide separating from the box slide, they do not come apart . And if they accidentally do , you will have ball bearings scattered from here to China . Good news is they will clean up fine soaked in parts cleaner, diesel, etc. I

is there a recommendation for screws to replace the rivets i drilled out? #10 seems too small, while #12 has too big a head to get through the access window in the slider. . . . .

You don't have to take them apart. A toothbrush with GooGone will remove all the old sticky grease from the steel balls. For the larger surface areas, GooGone and Scotch-Brite will clean that. Obviously, you'll have to use a towel to soak up the soup that you've made. After everything is clean, leave it alone. The GooGone leaves its own light lubrication behind for the steel balls.

Rivets are used for clearance issues re-rivet.

I have a KRL7002 80th i used white lithium on that one, never cleaned them. That one the drawers are weighted good so they open by themselves.

Ive had 3 different matco carts and they all came with little pamphlets that says to occasionally grease the bearings with wheel bearing grease. I used harley davidson wheel bearing grease and it seems to work just as well.

All the matco ones actually squeaked until i sprayed lube on all the rubber and plastic parts of the slide on top of the grease on bearings.

What you really want to use is a Dry Film lubricant, something with PTFE. Grease attracts dirt and that's where most of the problems begin. Many dry film lubricants also contain special rust inhibitors which offer exceptional corrosion protection. They can be found at HD with the other spray lubricants. Don't forget, Snap On rails carry a lifetime warranty. I replaced all the rails on a Taco Cart I restored, simply because they were so gummed up from grease, $225.00 in rails for free.

Another good idea (not mine) is to buy ABS or PVC pipe and a plug from the home center in suitable size to fit your slides, it makes soaking them efficient.

damn, that is a good idea. if you put a screw top on it, you could then roll it around and such.
